HUDSON, N.C. — Colby “The Kid” Howard scored a fifth place finish in Saturday’s uniquely formatted 100-lap limited late model race at Tri-County Motor Speedway.

The race was set up to run the first 75 laps, followed by a red flag break for the teams to make adjustments, and then finish with a final 25-lap shootout to the finish.

Howard, 14, qualified third fastest, but had the good fortune of being able to start on the pole due to an inversion in the qualifying order.

The rookie took the lead at the start and stayed out front until lap 10, when Matt Leicht began to challenge.

“I let him go and then Kevin Leicht passed me a little later on,” Howard explained. “I just wanted to run at my pace for the first 75 laps until the break. I wasn’t fighting them at all. I was fighting a push though, and that was making the car tight in the center of the corners and loose off.  We made some adjustments that we hoped would help that.”

It did. For a little while.

Colby ran with the top three for much of the second half of the race before falling back to fifth as the car’s handling went away again.

“We got very loose off,” he said. “It just got to where I couldn’t get back to the throttle as hard as I needed to. We had the speed in the car that we needed, we just didn’t have the handling.  It was a fun race though. I enjoy racing at Tri-County.  I can’t thank my family and sponsors enough for all they do to keep me racing. We’re not quite sure when or where we’ll run next, but I’ll be ready, that’s for sure!”
