SOPHIA, N.C. — Timing is a critical element in racing and for Burt Myers, Friday’s Keller Williams Realty 125 at Caraway Speedway could not come at a better time.
Myers is the reigning Southern Modified Racing Series champion and is looking for his first win of the season. The season opener was a Caraway, but a weather postponement moved it onto a date when Myers was on a family cruise.
As such, Friday night’s race will be the popular 41-year-old’s first run at the half-mile oval this season.
“We went there six times last year and won four of them,” said Myers. “So, Caraway has become a good track for us lately. I’ve run there forever, even went there with my daddy when I was younger. I don’t know what it is, but lately the combination and the rules package seems to suit us pretty well.”
After missing the season opener, Myers joined the tour at Orange County Speedway in Rougemont with a seventh-place finish. Two weeks ago, he was third at Concord Speedway and rallied late last week for a strong second-place finish.
“Concord was a place where I feel we had a really good shot to win,” added Myers. “Then last weekend I felt the same going to Southern National. If you look at my finishes this year, I’ve improved every race; so the only thing better than second is a win.”
In Myers’ second-place-finish on Saturday at Southern Nation he was the fastest car on the track at the end of the race and had closed to within a few feet of leader Brandon Ward on the final lap.
“I don’t know if it was bad luck, problems with a pitstop; it just seemed like there were little things that kept us from being where we needed to be,” said Myers of his winless start to the season. “And, our performance was off just a little bit.”
“People need to understand, just because you ran bad one week doesn’t mean that you let up in a certain department. You work just as hard, go through the same routine every week; it’s not because of a lack of passion, it’s just that things weren’t going the way we needed them to go. Hopefully we are getting back on track where we can get some momentum. Everybody is in good spirits and we are really looking forward to Caraway this weekend.”
The Keller Williams Realty 125 will be the second time the SMRS will have raced at Caraway Speedway in 2017. The season opener was held on March 19, with Mt. Airy’s John Smith grabbing the victory.
Friday’s race will be the fifth series race of 12 this season. Ward has won the last three races.
Joining the Southern Modified Racing Series on Friday will be the tracks Late Model Stocks (75 laps), Limited Late Models (30 laps), Chargers (20 laps), Mini Stocks (15 laps) and U-Cars (12 laps).
