TOLEDO, Ohio – ARCA Racing Series and Salem Speedway officials have announced that ARCA will again be returning to the Salem high-banks next year for the tour’s traditional two race dates in April and September.
The 103rd and 104th ARCA races at Salem are set in place for Sunday afternoon, April 22 and Saturday night, Sept. 15.
ARCA’s connection to Salem goes all the way back to 1955, when the track hosted its first ARCA race, won by Jack Harrison.
No track has appeared on ARCA’s annual schedule more over the years than Salem.
“The ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards has raced more at Salem than anywhere, going back, nearly, to the inaugural season,” said ARCA President Ron Drager. “When you consider all the changes in the sport since we started racing at Salem in 1955, and all the changes in the world, it’s incredible that we’re still driving back to that same spot on Highway 56, to that same track that still puts on some of the best short track racing in America.”
“We’re very proud of our connection to Salem Speedway, and we’re grateful for all the fans that come out to see our races there. When you crest that bend on 56 and look out at that campground full of race fans, you know you’re headed to a happening event. We are very excited about coming back in 2018.”
Building off the tradition established during the 100th centennial race in September of 2016, the 2018 Fall Classic will again be the official throwback weekend of ARCA.
“We had four or five throwback cars for the 100th race and it was very well received by the fans,” said track general manager Richard Deaton. “We had even more this year and we want to continue with that momentum and invite the throwback paint schemes back for next year’s Fall Classic. The ARCA race stands on its own at Salem … putting throwback cars out there is just an added bonus. We’re proud to host the Official Throwback Weekend of ARCA.”
Frank Kimmel is the all-time Salem winner with nine victories, followed by Jack Bowsher, who won seven straight from 1963 through 1965.
Past ARCA Racing Series winners at Salem also include NASCAR Cup Series champions Bobby Allison and Benny Parsons, 1952 Indianapolis 500 winner Troy Ruttman, six-time ARCA champion Iggy Katona, NASCAR veteran and ARCA champion car owner Ken Schrader, and three-time series champion Tim Steele.
