(Mooresville, N.C. – February 17, 2014) – MMM photo – Mason Mitchell and newly formed Mason Mitchell Motorsports made an immediate impact in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards this past weekend in the 51st running of the Lucas Oil 200 presented by MAVTV American Real at the famed Daytona International Speedway, finishing seventh in the team’s debut.
“For us to get out of Daytona with a top ten finish is huge, we avoided all of the accidents and positioned ourselves for a great finish at the end,” Mitchell said of his run.
Mitchell, and the No. 98 Thermal Technology Services, Inc. Ford timed in the sixth position in qualifying Friday afternoon for the 80 lap event. When the green flag waved Mitchell quickly worked his way inside the top five before “the big one” happened on lap 12 coming into the tri-oval. The accident collected several contenders.
Mitchell would pit under caution at lap 13 under the direction of veteran crew chief Brad Parrott. Parrott opted for a fuel only stop which sent Mitchell back on track in the fourth position.
During the second half of the race, Mitchell would fall back to the tail end of the top-ten due to overheating problems. A caution at lap 67 allowed Mitchell to come down pit road and remove tape from the front end.
The race restarted at lap 74 with Mitchell starting in the 16th position. The 19-year-old from West Des Moines, Iowa would methodically move his way from 16th to the 7th position at the checkered flag at lap 80.
“The final lap was nerve wrecking. I had no water pressure in the car, and after we crossed the start finish line the engine let go. I can’t thank everyone from MMM, Brad Parrott and Thermal Technology Services, Inc. enough. Without them none of this would be possible. They had 30 people come up from Clearwater for the race. I’m glad we could give them a great showing in our first race having them as a sponsor,” Mitchell said.
With his seventh place finish Saturday afternoon Mitchell’s top-ten streak is now at 10 in a row dating back to last August at Pocono Raceway. The ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards will be back in action March 22nd at the Mobile International Speedway for the “ARCA Mobile 200.”
