April 24, 2014 – series release — ARCA photo — MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Mason Mitchell has been riding a wave of momentum.
In his last 11 ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards starts, Mitchell’s lowest finish is an eighth-place last August at Pocono Raceway. Last month at Mobile, the 19-year-old from Iowa showed his newly formed Mason Mitchell Motorsports team is ready to win by finishing third in his second start with the team.
“Mobile was great for us,” Mitchell said. “To come out in our second start and earn a podium finish was huge. It proved that we are going to be title contenders in 2014.”
Mitchell hopes to continue that momentum this weekend when he enters the Federated Auto Parts 200 presented by Crunch’N Nutter at The Salem Speedway Fueled by the Hoosier Lottery.
Mitchell has two starts at the high banked half mile with a best finish of 5th last fall. Last year in the spring event Mitchell was racing for third with 50 laps to go before another competitor made contact with Mitchell ending his afternoon.
“I’m looking forward going back to Salem, I feel like I have some unfinished business from last year’s spring race,” he said. “We had a great two-day test really focusing on long runs and saving our tires.”
During the impressive top 10 streak, the Iowa native has earned two pole positions five top-fives, and back to back runner-up finishes at Kentucky and Kansas.
Mitchell will pilot chassis No. 588 Which made it’s on track debut last month at Mobile International Speedway. Mitchell qualified the No. 98 Thermal Technology Services Inc. Ford on the outside of the front row and finished third.
“One of the most difficult things about racing at Salem is not letting your competitors determine your pace,” Mitchell said. “You have to race your own race and race the racetrack. You truly are on the edge of your seat at Salem for every lap. The moment that you get comfortable behind the wheel you’ll find yourself in the wall.”
