WOODHULL, NY — official release — Audio by Paul Harkenrider — Susan Groover-Van Pelt Photo — 86 cars were signed in for Swarthout recycling night as the grandstands were packed with former Woodhull Legends, as well as Boy Scouts from the Thunder Bird District (Canisteo, Dansville, Avoca, Wayland, Cohocton, Bath, Jasper, Troupsburg, Bradford) were all in attendance for the Regular Big 6 show.
Billy Van Pelt, who had to start 12th because he was last week’s feature winner in the Insinger Performance 370 Modified’s, put himself in the top five in the first two laps before a caution came out involving the two race leaders, Eric Fisher and Chris Boudinot.
On the next restart, it only took Van Pelt one lap to pass Steve Hartman Sr, Mike Bills, And Kenny Peoples Jr to take over the lead on lap three, where he would begin to pull away from Peoples until another caution came out on lap 10. From lap 10 to lap 22, Peoples would contest Van Pelt as they raced very clean for the next 12 circuits.
Van Pelt was just too strong for the Peoples machine and though and he put his Hilfiger Contracting #78 back in victory lane once again for the fifth time this season. Peoples Jr finished in the runner up spot, followed by Mike Bills. Eric Fisher who was involved in an early caution made his way back up to fourth. Steve Hartman Jr, who has yet to win in 2014 after winning two features in 2013, completed the top five.
Van Pelt spoke to Woodhull Raceway announcer Paul Harkenrider in victory lane:
Corey Costa was finally able to put his Blue and Yellow #02 back in victory lane after pulling off three features wins in a row in July. Costa has been consistent since then finishing in the top five three times which still gives him an outside chance of picking up the NAPA Crate Sportsman track title. Russ Morseman, who is the current point leader in the division finished in second, followed by AJ Costley, who is third in the point standings. Josh Sawyer and Dillon Groover completed the top five.
Brett Marlatt was able to secure his track championship in the Joe Willcox Performance Street Stocks, as he was able to take the lead on lap four. Kurt Stebbins was able to challenge Marlatt for a while before Marlatt began to pull away. Stebbins finished in second, followed by Jeredd Dennis, Brenton Miller, and Gary Archer.
Bruce Miller was able to pick up his second feature win of the year as he held off a charging Glenn Writenour, who came up second, Steve Lebarron, Mikey Wonderling, and Josh Smith completed the top five.
Winning his first ever feature was Derrick Puryear in the Signs Plus Mini Stocks, Puryear, of Horseheads said “It feels great, never thought I would be could pull it off, but I got it done, the car has been hooked the last couple of weeks so I am glad to finally be here” in his victory lane interview. Mike Navone finished in second, followed by Brian Grant, Chad Ayers, and Mike Koser.
Two features were on hand for the Woodhull Auto Supply Front Wheel Drives and the night was swept by the Honda Power by Bird racing team. In the first feature, it was Adam Delgrosso picking up the win, which is his 5th feature win of 2014. In the second feature, it was teammate Ryan Austin picking up the win, his 5th win as well in 2014.
Next week, it is the regular season point’s championship, as the point standing are tight in every division. It will be a night you do not want to miss presented by Kibbe Oil & Gas Field Services. Gates will open up at 4:30, and racing will begin at 6:30.
