DUNDEE, NY — Story and Photo By Race Chaser Online New York Correspondent Steven Ovens — The close to each season at the 4/10-mile Yates County Speedway has become synonymous with the Empire 100.  The Empire 100 being a street stock race that is 100 laps in length and offering one of the largest payouts the division will see all year.

The race was started back when the speedway was known as the Black Rock Speedway under the management of Dean Hoag.  Hoag still owns the facility in 2014, however is leasing the speedway to veteran race promoter Dan Harpell.  In preparation for the huge event coming up at season’s end, a local internet racing talk show and veteran crew member have teamed up with the speedway to raise money to sponsor laps for the 100-lapper.

The Turn 5 Racing Podcast was born in October 2013 to cover the Empire 100 at the Yates County oval and has provided the most extensive Yates County Speedway coverage on the internet for the entire 2014 season.  Driver interviews, news, results and sometimes heated discussions have made the show popular with race teams and fans alike throughout the 2014 season.

Turn 5 LIVE

Turn 5, now phasing into a brand new LIVE call-in style show, airs every Tuesday night at 7pm and has stepped up in a big way to help make the prestigious ‘Empire 100’ event just a little bit sweeter.

Turn 5 Live Co-Hosts Steven Ovens and Clint Miller have teamed up with veteran Yates County Speedway crew member Jon Stuart to raise money to sponsor laps for the entire 100 laps of the Empire 100.  They will be selling laps at a minimum of $20 a lap that will be distributed to the drivers in the Top 7 running positions throughout the event.

The race leader at Lap 1 will receive Lap 1 money, 2nd place on Lap 2, 3rd place on Lap 3, etc.  Then Lap 7 will see the 7th place running car pick up the bonus while Lap 8’s bonus will start over again with the leader of the race.

Lap sponsors are not limited to $20 for a lap as many who have already expressed interest, like Christy Hill from the Creekside Racing stables and Steve Kent of Steve Kent racing have sponsored laps that nearly eclipse the $100 mark.

“We are just really excited to team up again with Dan Harpell to collect these lap sponsors for the Empire 100,” said Turn 5 Co-Host Steven Ovens.

“Dan Harpell, from the moment he announced he was taking over the speedway, has been a great supporter of the Turn 5 Podcast and now Turn 5 Live.  He has allowed us the access we need to provide the coverage we do and has helped us build up a pretty exciting ticket giveaway program for our listeners.  This is just a great way for us to team up again and show our appreciation for that.”

“This is going to make the best street stock race in the area even better,” were the sentiments of Turn 5 Live Co-Host Clint Miller.  The Miller name should ring a bell with the local dirt track fans as Clint’s father, Bill, will go down as one of the best street stock and late model drivers to roll around the Dundee oval.

Another piece to the lap sponsor puzzle is a veteran crew member of the Yates County Speedway pit area in Jon Stuart.  “I want to give back to the ones who make this sport what it is each and every week- the drivers,” said Stuart when interviewed Friday at the speedway.

The Empire 100 weekend will be held on Dutch Hoag National Open weekend Friday October 24th and Saturday the 25th, with a rain date of Sunday October 26th.  RoC Street Stocks will go 100 laps on the Saturday October 25th portion of the weekend.  The race typically has a format of the always popular Time Trials, Qualifying Heats and a 100-lap feature broken into two 50-lap segments.  Last year’s Empire 100 winner was Cory Costa.

If you’d like to sponsor a lap for the Empire 100 at Yates County Speedway please contact Steven, Clint or Jon at the racetrack or you can look any of them up on Facebook.  You an also email turn5podcast@gmail.com if you would like more information.
