OSWEGO, NY — official release — Bill Taylor Photo — In what is shaping up to potentially be the largest field of Novelis Supermodifieds this season at Oswego Speedway, the ‘Jersey Jet’ Joey Payne will be ready to return to the Graham/Strong Racing team after missing one week due to a non-racing related knee injury.

After finishing sixth in the first two Novelis Supermodified events of the season in the Pat and Terry Strong owned No. 99, Payne was forced to miss the May 31 Spring Championship with a knee injury sustained the week leading up to the event.

After a couple weeks rest, Payne will be back to action Saturday night, once again behind the wheel of the Strong Racing No. 99 driven the last two seasons by Michael Barnes.

“The Spring Championship was the first time in my career I have missed a race due to an injury,” said Payne.  “The knee is doing pretty good now; I just have to take it easy getting in and out of the car.  After missing that race I was glad I did because the pain was unbearable and I could barely move it.  After two weeks rest I feel I’m ready to go and look forward to being back.”

Payne is still waiting completion of the latest Xtreme Racing chassis to come out of the shop of Paul Colloca.

Ray Graham recently unveiled his brand new No. 90 Xtreme machine at the Speedway’s Spring Championship, and the new No. 99 to be driven by Payne is expected to be in the same low slung and sleek design mold.

Until then, Payne will rejoin forces with the full-fledged Strong No. 99 Supermodified that took Barnes to two feature wins in 2012.

With 25 Novelis Supermodifieds in the pit area on May 31, and only Bob Reis appearing not to return due to a wrist injury, the field for June 14 is truly shaping up.

Despite rear end issues in testing last Friday, which saw the engine in the Brian Sweeney No. 3 severely hurt, the CNY CPR machine is expected to be back in action Saturday night.

With the return of Payne and the possible first appearances of the season for Jerry Curran, Dave Cliff, and Howard Page, the Oswego field continues to gain promise and integrity.

Race fans are encouraged to get to the races early Saturday as the first driver autograph session of the season will take place beginning at 5pm.

All fathers in attendance Saturday will also receive a voucher for a free hotdog combo meal from the Speedway, available at all ticket windows until racing begins at 6:30 p.m.

Pit gates open at 2 p.m. on June 14 with grandstand gates opening and hot laps beginning at 3:30 p.m.

General admission seating is available for only $15 with Price Chopper Tickets to Go again available at any Price Chopper Supermarkets store for only $14.

Once again in 2014, kids 16 & under will be admitted free of charge with a paid adult with active military also admitted free with I.D.
