OSWEGO, NY – official release — Two photo collages containing a total of 25 photos of Jim Shampine from his earliest years through his racing career are going to be raffled off to benefit Families Fighting Flu. Jim’s grandson, Joseph Marotta IV, died of the H1N1 flu in 2009.
The idea for the fundraiser for Families Fighting Flu came during a brainstorming session. Lisa Sova wanted to do something to help FFF, so met with Serese and Joe Marotta to discuss ideas. During that brainstorming session Sova came up with the photo collage. “We were just talking about ideas,” she said, “when the idea of all the photos Serese must have of her father came to mind. Of course most of the photos have never been seen by anybody buy family and friends.”
From there it became a question of how best to display them. “I don’t know what made me think about displaying them in the windows of a door,” said Sova, “It just popped into my mind and we took off with it.”
Joe and Serese came up with 24 photos and a copy of a Jim Shampine autograph. Serese said “we looked at hundreds of photos. Even after paring it down as far as we could,” Serese continued, “we had more than we could fit in the door, so we added a window.” The idea worked, and the collages turned out beautifully.
The door is six feet three inches long and thirty two inches tall. It contains a total of eighteen photos, and a copy of Jim’s autograph. Serese said, “It’s the last autograph I have and I didn’t want to give it up, so we made a copy.” Seven of the photos in the door are personal family photos and have never been published. Photos include one of Jim in the Army Reserves in 1964, a photo of him at age one, and another when he was six years old, a photo of him holding Serese as a baby, and several career highlight photos.
The window is thirty one inches high by twenty nine inches high. There are six window panels and a total of seven pictures, but a dozen photo images as several of the pictures are photo montages. The window includes a photo of Jim in the sixth grade, the street sign on Shampine Drive by the Oswego Speedway, and ten racing photos.
The photo collages were first displayed at the Oswego Speedway during Christmas in July this past Saturday. This coming Saturday they will at Lighthouse Lanes in Oswego starting at 10:00AM for the Oldtimers Reunion, and will then be moved to the Oswego Speedway. Raffle tickets are $10.00 and will be available at both Lighthouse Lanes and the Oswego Speedway while the collages are on display. Winners will be drawn Classic Weekend. The first number drawn will have first choice of collages. All the money raised will go to Families Fighting Flu.
Families Fighting Flu is a nonprofit volunteer-based advocacy organization dedicated to protecting the lives of children. FFF works to increase awareness about the seriousness of influenza and to reduce the number of childhood hospitalizations and deaths caused by the flu each year by increasing vaccination rates. Both Serese and Joe Marotta are on the Board of Directors of Families Fighting Flu.
Tickets are on sale now for King of Wings VI. Tickets can be purchased at the Speedway box office or by phone.
