The 2016 season at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl is shaping up to be one of the best in the history of the track. The upcoming season will see multiple touring series invade the Shoreline oval — but will also see the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series divisions taking turns each week hoping to enter victory lane.
The season is scheduled to begin with a “Test and Tune” session on Saturday April 30, before the track opens the regular season on May 7 with a Saturday night event headlined by the SK Modifieds. From there, it won’t take long for the first of many big races to happen. The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour will headline the second night of action at the Speedbowl on Saturday May 14, with a feature event that will showcase the top modified talent from across the Northeast.
The touring series invasion continues on May 21, when the American Canadian Tour (ACT) hits the Speedbowl for a 100 lap event — the first of three in a special Southern New England series for this year that will include races at Seekonk Speedway and Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park. The ACT Tour will be a part of an Armed Forces Day Special at the Speedbowl that evening.
The North East Street Stock Tour (NESST) joins the action on May 28, before the Pro 4 Modifieds, NEMA Midgets and North East Mini Stock Tour join the action on Saturday June 4. Two Limited Sportsman 20 lap features and the New England Truck Series join the action at the Speedbowl on June 11.
Two events will conclude the month of June, including twin 25 lap SK Modified feature’s on June 25, along with an appearance on that same night by the Pro 4 Modifieds. The track will celebrate the Independence Day weekend on July 2 in style — bringing in the NEMA Lites and Vintage Midget Racing to join a special night that will include two 25 lap Late Model races. The track will then take a break for a week — before returning to action on July 16 with the Mid Season Championship night and a special on track pit party for the fans.
July 23 will be Nostalgia weekend with the Vintage Midget Racing, Senior Tour Auto Racers and NEAR along with the weekly NASCAR divisions. July will conclude on the 30th with another appearance by the Pro 4 Modifieds.
The annual “Wings and Wheels” will start August on Saturday the 6th, including appearances by the ISMA Supermodifieds, Valenti Modified Racing Series, NEMA Midgets, NEMA Lites and TQ Midgets. The event has been a staple at the Speedbowl for a while and will continue — including the SK Modifieds and SK Light Modifieds.
August 13 is the tentative Legends National qualifier at the Speedbowl while a “Time Trial Special” is scheduled for August 20. A special Thursday night event on August 25 will feature the Tri Track Open Modified Series (TTOMS) along with a special Legend Cars feature event and the New London-Waterford Speedbowl trucks that evening.
The Pro 4 Modified Series invades the track with the weekly driver’s on Aug. 27, while the NEMA Lites hit the Speedbowl on Sept. 3. The final Saturday night NASCAR Whelen All-American Series event is scheduled for Sept. 17. The Speedbowl is scheduled to hold the 2016 Legends Nationals on Oct. 6-8 — before taking a few weeks off to prepare for the New England closer.
The Shoreline oval will once again conclude the New England racing season with the 2nd annual “Bemer’s Big Show,” on Oct. 22-23 — which will also crown the champion’s for all the track’s weekly divisions. The TTOMS, NEMA Midgets, NEMA Lites, Granite State Pro Stock Series will lead the list of invading touring series for the weekend.
