Popular Oswego Speedway Supermodified competitor Billy “The Shark” Sharkey will make his long-awaited return to Supermodified racing at the 5/8-mile Port City oval in 2016.  Sharkey made the announcement Sunday evening on his Facebook page.

The fan favorite will be piloting a Hawk Chassis Supermodified that his brother, Ron Sharkey, has agreed to purchase from Syrell Racing, Billy said.  The car is the former No. 08 last driven by Canadian Dave McKnight in the 2012 Budweiser International Classic 200.

“It looks like Shark Motorsports will be going back racing!” the announcement read.

He told Race Chaser Online later in the evening that he was looking forward to getting back on the track.  “The racing thing is the worst drug ever,” he joked.

Best known for his time behind the wheel of brother-in-law Craig Danzer’s No. 52 Supers, Sharkey also drove for Ernie and Bob June in their No. 59 Super before purchasing his own car and numbering it 7, which he competed with in the 2004 season before a fire damaged the car too badly to repair.

He briefly returned to Oswego in 2013 behind the wheel of a Howard Page built Supermodified, also owned by brother Ron.  The car was numbered 71.  A stuck throttle resulted in a hard crash.  It was the last time Billy and the team competed together with that machine.

Race Chaser Online will have a feature interview with Sharkey later this week.
