Tommy Meier scored the biggest payday of his racing career on Sunday evening by winning the Eastern States 200 for big-block modifieds at Orange County Fair Speedway.
Meier started second and ran near the front of the pack all day, using several caution periods to keep himself in contention to win. Meier got to second on lap 162 and spent more than 30 laps chasing race leader Tim McCreadie until he finally got his opening.
That opening came during a lap 197 restart when Meier used a big run on the top of the track to pull ahead of McCreadie. The race was red flagged moments later when Anthony Perrego slowed on the front stretch before being slammed into by Matt Hitchcock, which flipped Perrego’s car over.
Brett Hearn, who was trying to pocket a $10,000 bonus for winning the Eastern States 100 and the Eastern States 200 in the same weekend, was able to get by McCreadie in final laps but was unable to track down Meier. Meier pocketed $35,000 for the victory.
McCreadie settled for third, followed by Andy Bachetti and Vic Coffey.
