SYRACUSE, NY — Story by Race Chaser Online New York Correspondent Steven Ovens — Super DIRTcar Series, Ohsweken Speedway and FMP Photos — Last Thursday’s Media Conference held inside the John Hill Media Center at NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week was big for several reasons.

The Patrick family from the now defunct Gater Racing News was honored with the Buzzie Reutimann Award for dedication to Super DIRT Week.  The 2015 schedule was also released and two tracks that have been added to the schedule are the Ohsweken Speedway and the Five Mile Point Speedway.

Ohsweken Speedway

For Ohsweken, this will be the inaugural trip to Glenn Styres’ track, which has historically been one of the best Sprint Car tracks in Northeast and Canada.  The sprint car talent at Ohsweken is some of the best in the business, alluring drivers like Jessica Zemken-Friesen who competed there weekly in 2014.  As the mighty modifieds roll in for their first trip, it will likely be to a packed house and the Ohsweken family are excited about their addition to the 2015 schedule.

Five Mile Point Speedway

One track that was a staple for a long time on the Super DIRTcar Series schedule was the Five Mile Point Speedway in Kirkwood, NY.  The track has been owned and promoted by the Harpell family and is currently run by Andrew Harpell, who is also the director of the Race of Champions brand of racing tours.  The RoC makes up of Asphalt Modifieds, Dirt Modifieds, Dirt Sportsman, Dirt Street Stocks and is wildly popular throughout New York State and Pennsylvania.

The announcement of Five Mile being added to the Super DIRTcar Series raised a lot of eyebrows as most would think of Five Mile/RoC and World Racing Group/DIRTcar as being competitors.  Harpell tells us that what some don’t realize is the respect and friendly neighbor attitude that is shared between the two groups, specifically between himself and Joe Skotnicki.

Andrew Harpell took some time away from his American Racer Cup event this weekend to tell us about adding the Super DIRTcar Series to the schedule for 2015:

The additions to the Super DIRTcar Series are going to be fun and exciting for race teams and race fans as the series expands to a new track and returns to several that haven’t been on the DIRTcar grid in a few years.  The series will return to Grandview Speedway after a 3 year hiatus, they will return to Fulton (again) after losing their original return date in 2014 to rain.

The series will also make it’s return to the Utica-Rome Speedway in 2015 after the originally scheduled return date in 2014 was lost to mother nature.  Eastern States Weekend will also return as a Super DIRTcar Series race in 2015.  The Series will kick off with 4 non-points races in Florida at Volusia and will be capped off at the World Finals in Charlotte in November of 2015.
