PENN YAN, NY — Blog by Race Chaser Online New York Correspondent Steven Ovens — Jeremiah Fish Photo — Ok, I stole a Joel Sebastianelli quote for this Blog’s title. That’s how I know I have made it in this writing, public speaking and radio world.
I thought I should do something spectacular to celebrate being with Race Chaser for about a year now. It was around this coming week that I started doing write-ups for Tom Baker and to think about everything that has happened since then is absolutely incredible. I owe Tom and Jacob Seelman a lot of credit for helping me get to this point as a writer and on-air talent. You guys are simply amazing!
But in all seriousness, this is by far the most wonderful time of the year if you’re a Northeast Dirt Track fan like I am. I’m getting prepared for a 3 races in 3 nights week this week and nothing beats a night at the race track as far as I’m concerned. The 4th of July falling on a Friday has worked itself out perfectly as it more easily allows folks to either take the days they need off or skip out of their jobs a little early to get to the track.
I decided for this week I wanted to mix it up a bit and hit a local track gem, a Modified/Sprint Car Doubleheader and my home track with a massive fireworks show. It would be an easy sell to just follow all of the SUNY Canton CNY Speedweek shows but after reviewing the schedule I couldn’t pass these ones up.
We’re going to start the week by making a trip down the New York State Thruway and then head North just shy of Niagara Falls. Going to make my 2nd trip of the year to the Ransomville Speedway for their ‘Battle at the Border’ race on Wednesday July 2nd. Last year Chad Brachmann pulled down a very popular win after going through some early season struggles with his Mighty Taco #3. That was one of the first interviews I did for Race Chaser and is one I will remember for a long time to come.
I do have to work at my Monday-Friday job on Thursday but when the 5 o’clock whistle goes off- it’s off to the Rolling Wheels Raceway in Elbridge, NY. On tap Thursday at ‘The Wheels’ is a Dirt Modified and 360 Sprint Car doubleheader. The Super DIRTcar Series will run the Stars & Stripes 100-Lap Big-Block Modified event, while the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints will run event #2 of the SUNY Canton CNY Speedweek Series with $2,000 going to the winner.
My 4th of July travels will probably start out with some time on either Seneca or Keuka Lake because it seems like a 4th of July thing to do these days. But when the sun goes down, we will be covering all of the action from the Yates County Speedway in Dundee, NY. They have a regular show on tap plus a $10,000 fireworks show planned. This is one of the largest fireworks shows that will take place in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State and has become a night where seats become a premium at the Yates County oval.
Hopefully wherever you are reading this from, you have just as much racing action coming up in your neck of the woods as well. As we now close Turn 5 with- take your kids to the races! They are our future and love spending family time at the races.
Until next time Race Chasers…keep it high, wide and handsome and keep it on the cushion!
