BREWERTON, NY – AUGUST 16, 2013 (By Dave Medler) – A perfect weather night, a large crowd and a full pits greeted everyone at the Brewerton Speedway Friday on Schneider Packaging Equipment Night. In the pits, over thirty Lucas Oil Empire Sprints and almost thirty SUNY Canton Sportsman signed in to do battle in round-four of the Industrial Tire Of CNY Sportsman Shootout Series. Also on the race card were the Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modifieds and Anchor Bar & Grill Mod Lites.

In the 25 lap A-Main for the Empire Super Sprints, David beat Goliath, as Dylan Swiernik beat the high dollar teams for his second win of the 2013 season. Swiernik took the lead from series point leader Steve Poirier on lap 11, and then survived a late caution and a challenge from Brewerton Big Block Modified star Larry Wight for the popular win. Steve Poirier, Paul Kinney and Jason Barney rounded out the top-five. Bryan Howland, Jeff Cook, Charlie Donk, Tommy Wickham and Lance Yonge completed the top-ten.

The most serious incident came late in the race when Etienne Girard, who ran at the front of the field most of the A-Main suddenly slowed in turns three and four leaving Shawn Donath nowhere to go. Donath made contact with the rear of Girard’s car sending him into a series of flips off the speedway causing serious damage to his car. Donath was okay after the wreck.

After parking his low budget No.7c in victory lane, Dylan Swiernik talked about his second ESS win of 2013.

“This is bitter sweet. Last week at Canandaigua, Steve (Poirier) and I, we were both running a good race and checked out on the field, and I ran on the outside of him and we got together, that’s racing. Tonight he was the one I had to pass for the lead and made sure it was clean this time.”

Even with multiple cautions, Swiernik never left to the top of the speedway once he got the lead. “From the get-go we were fast on the outside. I watched Stewart Friesen the last time on the outside,” Friesen won the ESS July 4th show, “and down through the middle as smooth as could be. I was wonder all through the race if the bottom was coming in. I just stuck to my guns up on the outside.” At the finish he was 0.398 of a second ahead of Larry Wight.

Larry Wight who is not a ESS regular but a top runner in the Big Blocks Modifieds talked about his stout second place finish.

“I really didn’t want to see that caution come out,” with less than a handful of laps to go, “I could see he was getting worse and worse on the top,” Wight was the only one at the front of the field who could make any moves payoff on the bottom.” I really think we could of had a shot if it (The caution) didn’t come out.

“It’s really nice to come here and put on a good show, and get a good top-five finish. It helps knowing what the track is usually going to do. Tonight was a little weird how it got so slick coming in and all the bite coming off, (the exit of the turns) “is not normal, but we were able to capitalize on it.”

Rocky Warner picked up his second Industrial Tire Of CNY Sportsman Series win in their 25 lap feature. Warner moved in second place on lap on lap 4, and then hounded race long leader Jeremy Pitcher before taking the lead on lap 13. Once out front, Warner was the class of the field, outrunning Ronnie Davis III who started 19th for the victory. Jeremy Pitcher, Earl Rudy and Chris Hulsizer finished third through fifth. Jason Parkhurst, Jim Spano, Dave Emmons, Mike Button and Ricky Donovan completed the top-ten.

With his second place finish, Davis grabbed the all important guaranteed spot for the Industrial Tire Of CNY Sportsman Shootout at the Fulton Speedway during the Outlaw 200 weekend October 4-5.

In the Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modified 20 lap feature, Rob Keller took the lead on lap 2 and looked to run away and hide. Everything changed on a lap 16 restart when Keller suddenly broke ending his shot at the win. When the race restarted, Jason Amidon took command of the race, and then held off points leader Kevan Cook for his first ever Brewerton win after countless top-five finishes. Jim Walsh, Chris Fleming and Dane Keller Jr. rounded out the top-five.

Sterling Miller lead from lap 2 to lap 9 till Joe Isabell was able to wrestle the lead away in the 20 lap Anchor Bar & Grill Mod Lite feature. Once out front, Isabell was the first under the checkers by 1.8 seconds over Miller. Doug Williams, Tim Devendorf and Rick Demo rounded out the top-five.

Coming to the Brewerton Speedway this Friday, August 23, Murtaugh Restoration and NAPA Auto Parts, a proud sponsor of the Brewerton and Fulton Speedway’s the NAPA Know Hoow Performer Of The Week, plus the NAPA Late Models at the Fulton Speedway present a full night of racing action.
