BREWERTON, NY – AUGUST 9, 2013 (By Dave Medler) – Coming into Friday night’s racing at the Brewerton Speedway, two of the stars in the Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modifieds had yet to find victory lane in the 2013 season in Larry Wight and point leader Matt Sheppard. With a pair of 35 lap features both drivers changed all that as they both picked up big wins. Both features went caution free.

Other winners on K-ROCK Night at the races were, Dale Caswell, Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modifieds, Alan Fink, Anchor Bar & Grill Mod Lites, Kyle Young and Chuck Powelczyk, Four Cylinder Super Stocks and Kyle Coffey 600 Micro Sprints.

In the makeup Big Block Modified feature that was postponed because of rain on July 19th, Larry Wight was the show. With everyone at the front of the field running the bottom, Wight went to the top of the speedway picking off cars lap after lap till driving by race long leader Jim Witko on lap 20. Once out front Wight was on rails as he drove away from Ryan Bartlett, Matt Sheppard, Pat Ward and Jim Witko who finished second through fifth.. For Wight, it was his first victory in his brand new Troyer chassis with less than a handful of races on it.

“We had a really good car and were able to anticipate what the race track was going to do, and do a little bit better than the guys in front of us,” Wight said about being able to go to the top of the speedway in his Gypsum Express/Tracey Road Equipment/NAPA Auto Parts/Stadium International Trucks/Industrial Tire Of CNY/L J L Kevlar Racing Engines/No.99L/Troyer/ while the cars in front of him ran the middle to the bottom. “I saw the top up there and knew there wasn’t a lot of marbles and hadn’t blown off yet. I wasn’t going anywhere on the bottom so I went up there, the car stuck and we were good.”

“We have been working really hard to get this Troyer in victory lane. We have had a lot of opportunities. Last week at Fulton we had nothing but bad luck. We had a good car all night and knew it was only a matter of time.”

Wight related that the reason he switched from Bicknell to Troyer was, everyone runs Bicknell’s in the area. You can only go as fast as the car next to you when everyone has the same setup. The win was a big confidence booster for him and his team now that the points season is near the end and the big money shows will be coming soon.

In the second 35 lap Modified feature, Dale Planck jumped out to the lead and looked to run away and hide in the early going. At the halfway point Planck had opened a full straightaway lead, while behind him, the heavy hitters were coming to the front. With 10 laps to go, the top-two in points, Matt Sheppard and Jimmy Phelps were closing the gap on Planck setting up a shootout to the finish. On lap 28, Sheppard and Phelps were all over Planck with the winning pass coming one lap later. Coming off turn two, Sheppard was able to find bite on the bottom and bolt into the lead. Once in the lead, Sheppard was able to pull away winning by 2.038 seconds over Jimmy Phelps. Dale Planck, Billy Decker and Matt Hulsizer finished third through fifth.

“Finally,” said Matt Sheppard after parking his FX Caprara Chevy/Xtreme Lubricants/Camara Slate/No.9s/Bicknell/ in victory lane for the first time in the 2013 season.

“This car has been fast here all year. We’ve been starting in the back, getting to the front, Starting in the back getting to the front,” Sheppard said about all the second place and top-five finishes he has been getting before Fridays win. “I was starting to wonder if it was going to happen at all.”

Coming into the night with two features, Sheppard was the points leader over Jimmy Phelps, and talked about the battle for the title with only two point races left. “A first and a third tonight, beating Jimmy (Phelps) in both features , that was big for us. Not a huge lead, but a pretty comfortable lead going into the last two races. We just got to keep this thing together and in one piece and do what we’ve been doing all season.”

In the 20 lap Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modified feature, Rob Keller, Dale Caswell and Kevan Cook put on a show. Keller took the lead on lap 3 but had Dale Caswell all over him lap after lap with Cook right there waiting for any mistake by the top two. After not finding a way by on the bottom where Keller was, Caswell went to the top making the winning pass on lap 16. At the finish you could of thrown a blanket over Caswell, Keller and Cook. Jason Amidon and Chris Fleming finished fourth and fifth. For Caswell it was his 41st Brewerton IMCA Modified win.

Alan Fink took the lead on lap 6 of the 20 lap Anchor Bar & Grill Mod Lite feature. Till a yellow with 2 laps to go, Fink was in total control. On the 2 lap dash to the checkers, Fink was able to hold off teammates Joe Isabell and Rick Demo at the finish. The top-three were only separated by 0.831 of a second at the checkers. Points leader Mike Mullen and Jeff Isabell Jr. rounded out the top-five.

Last week rookie Kyle Young picked up his first career win in the Four Cylinder Super Stocks at the Fulton Speedway. Friday night Young picked up his career first win at the Brewerton Speedway in the held over August 2-15 lap feature. Stephen Denton, David DeNova, Jessica Herbert Redhead and Chuck Powelczyk chased Young across the line. In the second feature, Chuck Powelczyk grabbed his 64th win in the division. David DeNova, Jeff Herbert, Jessica Herbert-Redhead and Jack Taskey finished second through fifth.

The 600 Micro-Sprints ran a special $700 to win 25 lap feature. Ben Kysor went from fourth and into the lead on the opening lap and pretty much dominated the race till a late yellow. Kyle Coffey got a great restart bolting by Kysor and then went onto the wild win. Brandyn Griffin, Ben Kysor, Dane Lorenc and Danny Knoll rounded out the top-five.

This coming Friday, August 16th, Schneider Packaging presents the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints and round-four of the $1,000 to win Industrial Tire Of CNY Sportsman Shootout Series. Also on the race card will be the Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modifieds and Anchor Bar & Grill Mod Lites. Four Cylinder Super Stocks will have the week off and the Modified Futures Race will not take place.. Gates open at 5:30 with racing at 7:30.
