Canandaigua, New York’s ‘Motorized Mad Man’ Darryl Ruggles went off on the local 305 Sprint Car competition in 2014.  The dirt driver known in the 90’s and 2000’s as a Dirt Modified pilot has been reborn into one of the more prolific 305 sprint car competitors in New York.  However, in 2015 he will be known for a lot more than just 305 sprint car competition.

Running a team of two cars with Darryl at the wheel of the 48jr and daughter Alysha at the wheel of the 48A, the Ruggles team swept the top two spots in points at the Canandaigua Motorsports Park.  In 16 starts, Darryl had 7 Wins, 13 Top 5’s and 15 Top 10’s enroute to the 2014 Canandaigua Motorsports Park crown.  In fact, during victory lane ceremonies on one of Darryl’s wins- Alysha was proposed to by her future fiance Nate.  A night that the Ruggles family will surely never forget.

Ruggles also dominated at the dirt track in Dundee, NY which was named Yates County Speedway in 2014.  Ruggles had the most wins by far but the division struggled to accrue the numbers that would allow the division to continue at the speedway in 2015.  However, that wasn’t due to a lack of effort by the man who would eventually earn the 2014 crown.

Darryl was the man who worked alongside then-promoter Dan Harpell to do whatever they could to increase numbers.  Pay normal purses even with dismal numbers, run the 305 sprints later in the night to accommodate late arrivals to a Friday night track and add them to some high-profile events.  Nothing they tried seemed to work as it became apparent that the contingent from neighboring Canandaigua Motorsports Park were mainly 1 night-a-week racers.  You have to tip your cap to them for giving it a go- they tried, it didn’t work and now it’s time to move on.

Move on the Ruggles team will in 2015.  Darryl and Alysha have struck a great deal with Danny Wilmes Enterprises who has backed this team in a big way for the upcoming season.  Wilmes is a name you may have heard here at Race Chaser Online before as he is also a supporter of rising talent Kelly ‘Lil Cobra’ Hebing.  Not only will race fans see the 48jr and 48a in weekly competition at Canandaigua, they will also see them traveling to select 360 Sprint Car events with the Empire Super Sprints and Patriot Sprint Tour.  Darryl has raced the 360 engine package before but this will be Alysha’s first crack at racing the open wheel sprint car with 360 cubic inches under the hood.

Ruggles took his turn in the Turn 5 Live hot seat and told Steven, Clint and Brad about the year that was and all that the team is looking forward to in 2015 racing 305’s and 360’s.
