WOODHULL, NY — Story and Audio By Race Chaser Online New York Correspondent Steven Ovens — Photo By Susan Groover- Van Pelt — Well race fans, the man who has been winning races at ‘New York’s Toughest Bullring’ has done it again for the 4th time this season.  Billy Van Pelt took home another checkered flag and doesn’t appear to be slowing down as he closes in on yet another Woodhull Raceway Modified track championship.

Van Pelt has been winning races on the highbanks since 1988 and has been the dominant force in the Modified division ever since.  Whether it was Billy or his brother Curt, another Modified standout in the Southern Tier, the Van Pelt name is synonymous with winning.  What is incredible is that Van Pelt continues his success in 2014- a year that many thought would see Van Pelt cool off a bit as he transitioned to a new race team in driving for Grant Hilfiger.  I think it’s safe to say we can put those thoughts to bed.

Billy has raced his heart out this season too which makes his 4 wins and points lead at Woodhull that much more impressive.  He has not only competed at Woodhull weekly, but raced a Sportsman car for Ray Smith at the Freedom Speedway in Delevan, NY as well as a Modified in special shows for Ryan Susice who was just crowned the Tri-Track champion earlier this week.

Van Pelt tells us that driving for Ryan Susice was an adventure that was born in the idea that the veteran could come drive a backup #38 and help the Susice team get a better hold of their Bicknell Racing Products cars.  As he tells us in our interview is quite the opposite- Van Pelt feels he learned more from the young modified star and his team than he was able to share with them.  That is really saying something for a guy who has won double-digit track championships in the Southern Tier and also has track championships at the Yates County Speedway to his credit.

Grab a seat or a Right Rear Hoosier if you have to and let’s talk Dirt Modifieds with Billy Van Pelt.  You can find him weekly at the Woodhull Raceway and they can be found online at
