After NASCAR moved up the start of Sunday’s Quicken Loans 400 from Michigan International Speedway, Mother Nature has intervened two separate times, slowing the action in the Irish Hills after just 19 of 200 laps have been completed.

A heavy downpour drew the caution, and then the red flag for 59:04, with 14 laps complete after the race began at 1:06 p.m. Eastern time.

The red was withdrawn at 2:30 p.m. Eastern time and five additional circuits were completed before a second shower dampened turn four and the frontstretch five minutes later, forcing a second red flag of 34:09 at lap 19.

Kasey Kahne started from the pole in the event, and he and Joe Gibbs Racing driver Carl Edwards exchanged the lead three times between them before the first red flag at lap 14. Edwards, scored the leader under the weather delay, led 17 of the opening 19 circuits — Kahne paced the other two.

The only incident of note in the first stint was on lap two, when Alex Bowman tagged the wall off of turn two and sustained right side damage to his No. 7 Tommy Baldwin Racing Chevrolet. Bowman was the only car one lap down at the lap 11 caution for rain and received the free pass back onto the lead lap.

NASCAR has 16 of the Air Titan track drying units on site at MIS to assist with restarting efforts, as well as 10 conventional jet driers. Sunday’s delay was the fifth time this year that inclement weather has impacted a Sprint Cup Series race. Three of the previous four were completed on the originally scheduled date.

Because of the lengthy caution periods for the weather, NASCAR has moved the competition caution, originally scheduled for lap 30, back to lap 40 when the race goes back green.

Below is the full field rundown as of 3 p.m. Eastern time, under the second red flag period.
