SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. – official release — The inaugural Norm Nelson Classic is slated for Sunday night, July 20 at Angell Park Speedway and will feature four racing divisions.

Joining the Zimbrick Chevrolet of Sun Prairie/Mid-State Equipment Badger Midget Racing Series and Badger 600 Micros will be the IRA Bumper to Bumper Outlaw Sprint Cars Series and the Wisconsin Dirt Legends.

The race will honor Norm Nelson, who won the first midget feature at the track on June 2, 1946. Nelson won the inaugural Interstate Racing Ass’n (IRA) championship in 1960, and his career is also highlighted by three USAC National Stock Car Championships and 25 USAC Stock Car wins.

Nelson’s 11 victories at the famed Milwaukee Mile place him second on the tracks all-time win list. Nelson’s granddaughter Brittany Mattie will sing the evening’s National Anthem.

The event for IRA ends a 29 year absence of winged 410 sprint car racing at the track. Grandstands open at 4:30 p.m., practice and qualifying begin at 6 p.m. with racing to follow.
