MOORESVILLE, N.C. — official release — MMM photo — Two years ago at Lucas Oil Raceway Mason Mitchell was virtually an unknown making his second career start in the ARCA Racing Series.
Fast forward two years and Mitchell is a household name in the series.
Last weekend Mitchell and his entire Mason Mitchell Motorsports team took a huge step by winning their first career race at Chicagoland Speedway. Mitchell passed Justin Boston with six laps remaining to cruise to his first win. Mitchell reclaimed the points lead over Grant Enfinger and leads by 25 points heading into the Scott Get Geared Up 200.
After capturing his elusive first career win at Chicagoland Speedway Mitchell and his MMM team welcome LOR back to the schedule.
“I was pretty bummed out last year when we didn’t race at LOR, it’s one of my favorite tracks that the series raced at,” Mitchell stated. “When ARCA announced it was heading back in 2014 I immediately circled the date on my calendar. This track really put me on the map as a driver two years ago.”
Mitchell has one prior start at LOR in 2012 starting second and finishing fifth. Mitchell led seven laps with the finish.
“LOR is different than any other short track that we race at all year long. You run right next to the wall. It’s so difficult to get underneath a driver and make a pass, but when the tires start wearing that’s when you will see guys be able to pass a lot easier.”
The emotion of the win is still sinking in though, despite the look ahead to LOR.
“Last weekend was so unbelievable, for us to win in just our 11th start as a team shows how hard these guys work. I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off of my shoulders. We know that we can get to victory lane and I believe we can roll off a few wins now.”
Streaking: Since starting his own team for the 2014 ARCA Racing Season, Mitchell has earned one win (Chicagoland) seven top-five finishes, 11 top-10 finishes (the only driver to finish in the top-10 in every ARCA race) and two poles (Toledo, Michigan). Mason has an average finish of 4.5. Mitchell’s top-10 streak is now at 20 races dating back to last August at Pocono Raceway.
Mitchell will be back behind the wheel of chassis No. 588 Friday at Lucas Oil Raceway. In four prior starts, the chassis has earned two top-five finishes, four top-ten’s with a best finish of second (Toledo) and a worst finish of 10th (Elko Speedway).
