The world of racing media has changed in the last 10 years.
Back in the day, everyone got their fill of motorsports news and gossip from the big three networks (ABC, NBC and CBS), ESPN and Speed — and then came the internet. With the internet came a new type of media: grassroots media.
Grassroots media encompasses all of us that bring the sport to you for little more than the love of the sport. My long running radio show, Burning Rubber Radio, is among one of the first grassroots radio shows to actively cover the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. During the last 10 years, Burning Rubber Radio, Race Chaser Online and the Performance Motorsports Network have all developed an great relationship with NASCAR, ARCA, the Pirelli World Challenge, and the SCCA, among others.
I consider myself lucky to have had the privilege to see grassroots motorsports develop from infancy to maturity.
This year, I have gotten to experience the next step in the progression of grassroots media. I am part of the team that is covering the SCCA Hoosier Tire Super Tour on the Performance Motorsports Network, and admittedly, it has taken some getting used to. I’m used to driving many hours to and from the track in my own car, burning my own gas, purchasing my own hotel (or sleeping in my car) and burning vacation time at my full time job as a cop to cover events.
Now, I get flown to the venue (on their dime), have a hotel room waiting for me, have real professional equipment shipped to the track for the team to broadcast with and I actually get paid to do it. I honestly never thought I’d see that day come.
Two weeks ago, the PMN team brought you the Super Tour from Sebring Int’l Raceway, and this weekend we will be bringing fans the Super Tour from Circuit of the Americas in Texas.
This is a dream come true for me. I still have a huge love for the sport, but now it is a whole bunch easier for me to bring it to you. I am very privileged to be with producer Bob Steele and the Performance Motorsports Network crew. The cherry on top of everything is getting to share my thoughts with you here in my regular columns on Race Chaser Online.
I look forward to continuing bringing you my thoughts and experiences here and on the Performance Motorsports Network for a long time to come.
Tighten those belts and get ready for a fun, fast, thrilling ride.
