WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. — Less than a week after winning his first race of 2017 to all but lock his team into the NASCAR playoffs, Kyle Busch posted the top time in the first round of Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series practice at Watkins Glen Int’l on Saturday.
The driver of the No. 18 M&M’s Caramel Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing posted a top speed of 125.516 mph around the famous 2.454-mile road course. Busch’s time around the course was 1:10:270 and came on his ninth lap of practice out of the 15 laps the team ran on course.
Fellow Toyota Racing teammate Martin Truex Jr. was second with a time of 1:10:675 at 124.797 mph, while defending Watkins Glen winner Denny Hamlin was third quick with a time of 1:10:817 and 124.546 mph, making it a Toyota sweep of the first three positions.
Jamie McMurray and rookie Erik Jones completed the fast five on speed in the opening round.
Jimmie Johnson, Corey LaJoie, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Danica Patrick and Kurt Busch all went for spins at various points around the Watkins Glen race course. There was a question brought up in the garage about exchanging tires that had been flat-spotted from spins.
NASCAR related that teams may exchange tires if there was no competitive advantage to doing so. Jimmie Johnson only had a lap on his tires at the time of his spin, therefore he was able to make an exchange to go back out for practice.
