AVONDALE, Ariz. — At least briefly on Saturday morning, Kevin Harvick’s dominance of Arizona’s ISM Raceway was put to the test, matched on single-lap speed by Chase Elliott.

Harvick and Elliott tied for the fast lap during the second Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series practice session at the one-mile desert oval, putting up identical laps of 26.705 seconds (134.806 mph) early in the 50-minute round.

The 2014 Cup champion is looking for his record-extending ninth Phoenix win with the No. 4 Jimmy John’s Ford, while Elliott continues to chase his first-career Cup victory in the No. 9 NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet.

Elliott, however, had the best car of anyone over the long haul, posting the fastest 20-lap average in the session.

Kyle Busch was third-fastest in the first practice of the day, with a time of 26.735 seconds (134.655 mph) in the No. 18 Skittles Sweet Heat Toyota, followed by Brad Keselowski and Denny Hamlin.

Hamlin laid claim to both the best 10-lap and 15-lap averages on the final speed charts.

Ryan Newman, Martin Truex Jr., Jimmie Johnson, Joey Logano and Kyle Larson completed the top 10.

Final practice for the Ticket Guardian 500 is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. ET, live on FS1.
