HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. – Alon Day will become the first Israeli national to compete in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series when he takes the wheel for BK Racing next weekend at Sonoma Raceway.
The 25-year-old, who was named Israel’s Athlete of the Year in 2016, will pilot the No. 23 EarthWater Limited Toyota Camry as he makes his debut at the Cup level.
Day has the unique distinction of being the first stock car driver from outside of North America to be selected for the NASCAR NEXT program, an initiative to feature NASCAR’s future stars.
He comes to Sonoma after being crowned King of Brands Hatch, as a result of last week’s victory in the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series race at England’s Brands Hatch circuit.
The Israeli driver intends to compete for the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series championship, and plans are already in place for him to return to the NASCAR Cup Series later this year at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) Int’l.
Day is also expected to drive in select NASCAR XFINITY Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series races this year. He made two starts each in the XFINITY Series and Truck Series last year.
“I’m very excited to make my debut in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series next week in Sonoma,” said Day. “Being the first Israeli who is going to race in NASCAR’s highest Series is a dream come true. I must thank BK Racing, EarthWater Limited, as well as Hall of Famer Franco Harris, Super Bakery, and Silversport for giving me this awesome opportunity.”
EarthWater Limited will be on board Day’s Toyota at Sonoma Raceway. EarthWater was first introduced to NASCAR earlier this season when they were on board the BK Racing Toyotas for the Martinsville, Texas and Charlotte races.
“We’re excited to partner with BK Racing for this groundbreaking moment in NASCAR’s history which features an amazing driver who will be competing at the highest level with world class drivers,” said EarthWater President Cash Riley Jr. “With increasingly numbers of issues around dehydration in all sports, especially during the summer, we are honored to offer a solution and bring awareness to a life-threatening issue. We’re looking forward to the celebration of diversity at Sonoma and the continued expansion of our global brand.”
“I like giving new drivers an opportunity, and Alon is a great road course driver,” said BK Racing team owner Ron Devine. “He has been successful in other series around the world and deserves a shot in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series.”
Day joined the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series in 2015 after a stint in GT racing, immediately emerging as one of the brightest talents of the European NASCAR ranks in the No. 54 CAAL Racing Chevrolet.
The Ashdod native won the Junior Trophy in both 2015 and 2016, finishing second and third in points, respectively. He scored a total of seven wins and four poles during that span.
“We are very proud of Alon being the first driver of the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series to reach the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series level. This is a great achievement for the development programs we built with NASCAR and shows to every driver outside of North America that the American NASCAR dream can become real,” said NASCAR Whelen Euro Series President and CEO Jerome Galpin. “We have very talented drivers coming from all over the world to compete in Euro NASCAR, making this championship one of the best in Europe.”
“Alon is a great driver and very nice guy who really deserve this opportunity. We wish him the best for this event and expect lots of our drivers to follow his footsteps.”
