MONTREAL, Quebec, Canada — Continuing to show his affinity for driving at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Lewis Hamilton swept to a dominating victory in Sunday’s Formula One Canadian Grand Prix, starting from the pole and leading every lap.

Hamilton was able to build up enough of a lead delta out front that when he pitted on lap 32 of 70, he was able to come out ahead of Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas, an order that never changed again through the race’s conclusion.

Sunday moved Hamilton to within one win of Michael Schumacher’s record mark of seven in Montreal, and it was his 56th career F1 victory all-time.

Bottas came home second, ahead of a fierce battle for third that was ultimately won by Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo for the final podium spot.

Sebastian Vettel rebounded from a disastrous start that saw him sustain damage to take fourth, utilizing a two-stop strategy to haul past the pair of Force Indias inside the final six laps.

Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon were fifth and sixth, respectively, followed by the sister Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen and Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg.

Canadian rookie Lance Stroll took his first-ever Formula 1 points, with an outstanding run from 17th to ninth, with Haas’ Romain Grosjean completing the points-scoring drivers in 10th.

Two-time champion Fernando Alonso was on pace to score points, running 10th with two laps to go when his engine expired and he rolled to a stop in sector two.

Max Verstappen had a brilliant start, going from fifth to second on the opening lap as Carlos Sainz and Felipe Massa crashed in the middle of the pack at Turn 3, but a mechanical failure ended the young Dutchman’s race on lap 11.
