After waiting all day to get on track, a Sprint Cup Series driver emerged at the top of the practice sheets for the Kentucky 300. But, it wasn’t one of the usual double-dippers.

J.J. Yeley turned the fastest lap of the session at 30.863 seconds (174.967 mph) in his No. 28 JGL Racing Toyota. This isn’t the first time Yeley has shown speed in practice, as the Phoenix, Arizona native posted quick times in both practices three weekends ago at the Chicagoland Speedway.

Yeley went out early in the session when the track was still green after all-day rain hampered all on-track activity at Kentucky Speedway. There were five drivers who eclipsed the 174 mph mark, including three Richard Childress Racing drivers. Ty Dillon (second) and last fall’s Kentucky winner Brendan Gaughan (174.526 mph) slotted in right behind Yeley, before 2013 July winner Brad Keselowski broke up the RCR party in fourth (174.222 mph). Paul Menard makes his return to the series for the first time since Michigan and was fifth-quick (174.137 mph).

Brian Scott was one of the early cars to go out and was loose during his first run. He led the most laps last weekend at Daytona and posted the ninth-fastest time at 31. 232 seconds (172.9 mph).

A few, brave drivers took first to the 1.5-mile track after some drivers such as Dale Earnhardt Jr. and NXS points leader Chris Buescher reported there were some weepers around the track.

Regan Smith led the JR Motorsports trio in practice in 13th (172.018 mph), with defending NXS champ Chase Elliott (171.958 mph) right behind Smith. Earnhardt was 16th (171.211 mph) in his first time back in an NXS car since April at Texas.

There were only two Fords in the top-10 with Keselowski and Darrell Wallace Jr. (eighth). Buescher was 15th (171.554 mph). All 40 cars took time in the session.

The XFINITY Series won’t see the track again until Friday afternoon at 3:45 p.m. ET for Coors Light Pole Qualifying. Brad Keselowski is the defending pole-sitter.
