Don Schumacher Racing announced late Friday that driver Spencer Massey has been released as driver of the Red Fuel Powered by Schumacher/Sandvik Coromant Top Fuel dragster in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series.

“Spencer is no longer with DSR,” team owner Don Schumacher said in a statement. “He violated a DSR policy and would not correct the violation. I feel badly for members of the team because they will not be able to compete for a world championship or next weekend’s Traxxas Shootout title.”

An 18-time Top Fuel winner, including at this year’s Gatornationals in Florida, Massey stands 10th in the division’s points standings entering the final event of the regular season, the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis.

This is the second time Massey has been released by DSR for a conduct violation, following an alcohol-sparked incident at the championship banquet in 2012 where the young driver directed a tirade at teammate Antron Brown, who had won the Top Fuel title that season.

Massey went through anger-management counseling following his dismissal, and was rehired by DSR prior to the start of the 2013 campaign after additional sponsorship was found for the team.

Schumacher did not comment on the future of the Red Fuel Powered by Schumacher/Sandvik Coromant Top Fuel team.
