On Saturday afternoon, Evergreen Raceway hosted their third Enduro event of the 2016 racing season.

A wide variety of cars were on hand and plenty of them appeared to be able to claim victory in ‘Enduro MayHam’. When it was all said and done, Pete Verwys of Stroudsburg bested the Four Cylinder division, as did Harry O’Neill in Open Competition action. After crossing the stripe second and following a disqualification, Elliott Wohl of Beachwood, NJ was awarded the 6/8-Cylinder victory.

From the pole position, Nate Correll led the fifty five car strong Four Cylinder field to the drop of the green flag. He led the opening circuit over Pete Dewey, David Wolfe, Ian Goodard and Pete Verwys.

With a few laps in the books, Verwys, who had already drove into second, overtook Correll for the top spot. Shortly after, Paul Mercante joined the top five and then made his way up to the leader. Mercante battled with Verwys and then took command on lap 13, but Verwys came back to regain the spot four laps later.

The second of five total red flags waved on lap 29 when Michelle Fegley made hard contact with the wall near the pit entrance in turn one. She was shaken up a bit and exited her car under her own power. Although it wasn’t the result that she wanted, it did make her win the ‘Rough Ride of the Day’, which was sponsored by Sager’s Service.

With the green flag back out and with Verwys still showing the way, several drivers drove up into the top five and tried reeling in the leader. First it was Frank Petroski, Jr, followed by Kenny Kleppinger and later Jimmy White, Jr. Petroski’s day came to an end after a crash and Kleppinger was forced to pit with a flat tire.

When the checkers finally waved, Verwys had a three lap advantage over White, who finished in second. Cliff Holland, Dustin Pietrak and Richard Wolfe completed the top ten.

Correll also started from the point in the 100-lap 6/8-cylinder Enduro, yet he was quickly overtaken by Scott Sipe. With a lap complete, Correll settled into second, followed by Chris Kemmerer, Harry Sager and Elliott Wohl.

With three laps complete, Kory Stevens jumped into the third spot and then he overtook Correll for second one lap later. For the early portion of the show he appeared to have the only car that could navigate through traffic like the leader but that all came to an end when suffered a flat on lap 34. With 35 laps complete, Sipe held the point over Sager, Brandon Cook, Wohl and Correll.

After having a great run in the first half of the show, Cook was forced to retire to the pits and Kemmerer rejoined the top five. Just past halfway, Wohl overtook Sager for second but could not gain ground on the leader.

After leading every lap, Sipe crossed the finish line for what would have been his first Evergreen victory, but that feat was taken away in post race tech inspection. The turn of events gave Wohl the victory and Sager, Correll, Mike Parisi and Kemmerer completed the top five.

Several drivers in a wide variety of cars took part in the 30-lap Open Competition show, which had Frank Katona on the pole position. Katona was overtaken for the lead by Harry O’Neill on the opening circuit, yet he settled into second, followed by Brayden Spencer, Noah Jensen, Sam Jensen and Corey Collier.

As O’Neill began to pull from the rest of the field, Spencer got racey, and moved into the second spot on lap two. However, after making great strides in the early going, he pulled pitside with mechanical troubles.

O’Neill was unchallenged to the finish and took the victory over Katona, N. Jensen, S. Jensen.

The Evergreen Modifieds are back on the schedule for “Pack the Track” next Sunday at Evergreen Raceway. The Late Models, Street Stocks, Four Cylinders, Atlantic Coast Old Timer and Vintage ATQMRA club cars will be included in the action as well, and grandstand admission is only $4! The track will also host Big Wheel races for the kids during intermission. As always, children 10 years of age and younger will be admitted into the grandstand area for free with a paying adult.
