Cunningham Motorsports’ co-owner, Kerry Scherer, announced that his organization has reached an agreement with Roush Fenway Racing to become a driver development team for them in the ARCA Racing Series. Their primary driver will be 17-year old Kyle Weatherman, who will join the Cunningham team for the next ARCA race at Mobile International Speedway in Irvington, Ala., on Saturday, March 14.
Weatherman has made 13 ARCA Series starts, earning five top five finishes and ten top-10 finishes, while leading 91 laps in three races. He had back-to-back runner up finishes in 2013 at Iowa Speedway (IA) and Salem Speedway (IN), when he was just 16 years old.
In addition, he garnered a pair of fourth place finishes at Winchester Speedway and Salem Speedway, both in Indiana. During Weatherman’s eight ARCA starts last season he grabbed another fourth at Berlin Raceway (MI). His career-best qualifying effort came in 2013 when he won the outside pole at Iowa Speedway.
In seven years of racing Weatherman has built an impressive racing resume, which includes over 190 victories and four national championships in the USLCI Legend Car Series.
“I’m ready to get the 2015 season started with a great group of guys,” Weatherman commented. “I’ve already been over at the shop, working with the guys and they are all hard workers. I believe we can put together some top-five finishes and a few wins this season, if we work hard and keep working together as a team. I am really excited to be with Cunningham Motorsports.”
Weatherman’s schedule of races has not been completed at this time, but Cunningham and Roush Fenway expect he will be racing as often as his age and his development schedule will allow.
“We are excited to partner with such a tradition-rich organization as Roush Fenway Racing,” Scherer explained. “We look forward to working with Kyle, a truly gifted driver, to help him reach his goals with Roush Fenway.”
