SOPHIA, N.C. – The Southern Modified Racing Series presented by PASS has modified its rules to allow Mod Lite-type cars into competition with the tour-type modifieds.
The Mod Lite division winner will be recognized in victory lane ceremonies with a trophy, and will also receive recognition for the fastest qualifying lap among other Mod Lite cars.
This change will allow the teams that haven’t been competing a chance to come race with the series and eventually move up to the tour-type division. It will also increase the car count and give the fans a race within a race.
“Many teams have contacted me over the past weeks wanting to join our series, and after researching the best avenue we have tweaked our rules for these teams, enabling to compete rather than stay in the garage,” said series director Renee Hackett. “I think the Mod Lites will add excitement to the series and the fans.”
The series has also changed the tire rule to allow the lower budget teams to save the cost of the tire change by allowing teams to bring an approved scuff left front to use for qualifying and the start of the race. Teams will be allotted five total tires for the event.
Teams will still be allowed to purchase five new tires, but will also have the option to bring an approved scuff and use one of the new tires for the pit stop.
“After listening to many teams, we decided to make the (tire) change to help out with the rising cost of racing,” Hackett added. “Most teams will still purchase five new tires, it gives teams the option to save the cost of an additional tire, thus increasing the car count.”
