Athenian Motorsports announced Monday that Dylan Lupton will drive the No. 25 Chevrolet in seven NASCAR XFINITY races this season.
Lupton, a 21-year-old native of Wilton, Calif., is scheduled to make his XFINITY Series debut at Phoenix International Raceway on March 14.
Lupton brings a sparkling racing background to NASCAR’s junior circuit. In 14 starts last year in the NASCAR K&N West Series, he claimed one victory wound up in the top 10 in each event, including nine top-five finishes. Last April, Lupton was one of just 12 drivers named to the elite NASCAR Next class.
“I am very grateful for my new opportunity at Athenian Motorsports in the NASCAR XFINITY Series,” said Lupton, who is currently a college student at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte. “When I started off racing go karts locally in northern California, in 2008, I only dreamed of being lucky enough to race in NASCAR’s second tier series. Over the last few years my family and I have been working extremely hard to get me to this point in my career.”
Athenian Motorsports will field a full-time entry in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series for veteran driver John Wes Townley, who will also pilot AMS’ No. 25 Zaxby’s Chevrolet in 26 XFINITY Series events.
In addition to the spring race in Phoenix, Lupton will also drive the No. 25 Chevrolet at Richmond in April and Chicagoland Speedway in June. He’ll be behind the wheel three times in August, including Iowa Speedway, Mid-Ohio and Road America. The seventh race will be at Kentucky Speedway in September.
“We are delighted to be able to put Dylan, a young driver with a lot of potential, in our No. 25 Chevrolet in the NASCAR XFINITY Series for these seven races this season,” AMS team owner Tony Townley said. “Since John Wes is running the full NASCAR Camping World Truck Series schedule and a partial schedule in the No. 25 Camaro, Dylan stepping in will allow us to field an entry in all 33 XFINITY Series races this year.
“With John Wes and Dylan sharing the wheel and the veteran leadership of Mike Ford on the pit box, I believe some really good finishes are in store for this team.”
Ford, a multi-race winning crew chief in the Sprint Cup Series is looking forward to working with Lupton.
“The No. 25 crew is excited to have Dylan join us this season,” Ford said. The XFINITY Series is where futures in this sport begin. This is a responsibility that we look to capitalize on. We will work hard to make Dylan’s first step into the upper ranks of NASCAR a solid one.”
Lupton is eager for the date of his mid-March debut in Phoenix to arrive.
“With Mike Ford on top of the pit box and Chevrolet engines from Hendrick Motorsports under the hood, there is no reason why we should not find success in the 2015,” Lupton said. “Mike has proven that he is a great crew chief in this sport, so I look forward to gaining knowledge from him at the track and at the race shop.”
“I know there is going to be a learning curve jumping into these new cars, but I am anxious for every race this year.”
