For the first time in 2016, Kasey Kahne is showing consistent speed in his No. 5 Great Clips Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports.

After qualifying second on Friday for Sunday’s STP 500 (1 p.m., FS1, MRN, SiriusXM), Kahne paced the first of two Saturday practice sessions for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series at Martinsville Speedway.

Kahne’s time of 19.710 seconds (96.073 mph) was enough to beat out Richard Childress Racing driver Ryan Newman, who was second in the session. Newman toured the 0.526 mile oval with a fast time of 19.756 seconds (95.849 mph), just in front of Furniture Row Racing driver Martin Truex Jr. (19.788/95.694).

Stewart-Haas Racing substitute driver Brian Vickers drove his No. 14 Janssen Chevrolet to a fourth place effort in the opening Saturday session (19.795/95.661). RCR driver Paul Menard, who qualified fourth for Sunday’s race, rounded out the top five (19.800/95.636).

2014 fall Martinsville winner Dale Earnhardt Jr. was sixth with his fast time of 19.810 seconds (95.588 mph), while the surprise of the session was Germain Racing driver Casey Mears, who was seventh overall.

Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Matt Kenseth and Denny Hamlin were eighth and ninth, followed by HScott Motorsports’ Clint Bowyer, who posted his best practice effort this season with a 10th place run.

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will hit the track once m0re on Saturday for final practice, scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1.
