Now that the lineup has been completed for the 57th Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway, most drivers are avoiding on-track practice sessions in an effort to avoid wrecking their machines.

But during the final allowed on-track time Friday afternoon, Budweiser Duel winner Dale Earnhardt Jr. was fastest of the 25 cars that took times during the final practice session of the afternoon.

Junior, the defending winner of the Great American Race, led the session with a top speed of 194.405 mph and was the only driver to break the 194 mph barrier – a testament to the statements he made following his win in the Duel last night.

“We’ve had fast cars in single-car runs that don’t draft well and we’ve had cars that draft well but run slow in single-car runs,” Earnhardt said in the media center last night. “This car is fast no matter what.”

Earnhardt Jr.’s teammates Kasey Kahne (193.528) and Jimmie Johnson (193.096) made up the top three positions during the practice.

After being involved in a post-race scuffle with Denny Hamlin last night and moving to her second back-up car during Speedweeks, Danica Patrick (192.810) restored some team morale and slotted in fourth on the speed charts.

Despite posting a decent lap, Patrick did have smoke pour from the bottom side of her No. 10 Chevrolet during the practice. The culprit was a loose water line, which the crew quickly made repairs to in order to cure the issue.

Making his first Daytona 500 start this weekend driving the famed Wood Brothers Racing machine, Ryan Blaney (192.781) was fifth fastest during the session.

Kyle Busch, Greg Biffle, 2010 Daytona 500 champion Jamie McMurray, Carl Edwards, and 2014 Daytona 500 polesitter Austin Dillon rounded out the top 10 positions.

There is just one more practice session, tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. local time, before Sunday’s big race.
