OSWEGO, N.Y. – official release — Yankeeracer.com photo — When the 64th annual Race of Champions Weekend gets underway on Saturday and Sunday at Oswego (N.Y.) Speedway, two open-wheel racing superstars will be in the lineup.
Two-time Super DIRTcar Syracuse 200 champion Stewart Friesen and former NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Bobby Santos are expected to be at the ‘Steel Palace’ for a weekend’s worth of action.
Friesen is expected to make his first start in an asphalt Modified on Sunday for the Sunoco Race of Champions 200, in a Rick Kluth-owned Modified.
One of the most versatile drivers in all of racing, Friesen already has wins in both Modified and 360 Sprint Car competition this season.
Plans are for Friesen to also test on Friday at the Speedway.
Santos who recently drove to a fourth-place finish in the 58th annual Budweiser Int’ Classic 200 driving the Graham Racing No. 11 Supermodified, is expected to return to Supermodified action this weekend.
Like Friesen, Santos plans to test on Friday night from 4-8 p.m. prior to racing on Sunday, but this time will drive the newest Xtreme chassis design No. 21 Supermodified, driven in the 2014 Int’l Classic by Ray Graham.
Plans have not been announced as to whether or not Santos will also contend in the Sunoco Race of Champions Modified 200 on Sunday.
SUNOCO Race of Champions Weekend opens its racing program Saturday, Sept. 13 with grandstand gates opening at 3:30 p.m. The racing action will start Saturday at 5 p.m.
