OSWEGO, NY — official release — The Budweiser International Classic 200 qualifying trail will reach high gear this Saturday, as the ISMA Supermodified tour opens at the home of the Classic, Oswego Speedway.

For the first time since 2007, Oswego Speedway will award guaranteed starting positions to the top drivers in the Midwest Supermodified Association, the International Supermodified Association, the Novelis Supermodified division at the Speedway, and Oswego’s top Pathfinder Bank Small Block Super driver.

The top two drivers in MSA, ISMA, and Oswego Supermodified points as of July 1 will be guaranteed to start the Budweiser International Classic 200 on August 31.  Added to that group will be the leading driver in Oswego’s Small Block Super division as of July 1 making for a total of seven guaranteed driver positions in the 200.

Selected guaranteed starters must time trial for the International Classic and be within .4 of a second of the 28th fastest time trailer in order to be added to the field without competing in the Bud Light B-Main.

ISMA’s season was set to begin on May 3 at Oswego, but rain forced the cancellation of the weekend.  As a result, ISMA’s International Classic qualifying standings will not debut until after the Shea Concrete ‘Steel Palace’ ISMA Super Series opens on Saturday night.

The Midwest Supermodified Association has contended in two main events this season at Sandusky Speedway with the third race of the year set for green on Saturday at Lorain County Speedway in Ohio.

Currently the MSA’s guaranteed starters are North Ridgeville, OH driver Dave Shullick Jr., and Trent Stephens of Shalersville, OH.

Shullick, driving the Jim Bodnar prepared No. 94, has won both events on the MSA trail so far in 2014 at Sandusky Speedway and leads Stephens by 12-points in the MSA driver standings. While Shullick has been on a tear in the winged Supermodified world, he also finished third in the Novelis Supermodified Jim Shampine Memorial at Oswego Speedway on May 24, driving for John Nicotra Racing, the same team that he will drive for in the 58th annual Budweiser International Classic on Sunday, August 31.

Stephens, who pilots the ACME Racing No. 19 Supermodified in the MSA, currently holds a 7-point edge on Kyle Edwards and Jon Henes for the Midwest’s final guaranteed starting spot in the Budweiser International Classic 200, worth $1,000.

Interestingly enough, Shullick will opt to compete with the ISMA Supermodified Series this Saturday at Oswego surrendering his current MSA point lead, effectively handing his guaranteed position to another driver from the Midwest.

Edwards, Henes, Charlie Schultz, Jim Paller, and AJ Lesiecki will be the drivers on the outside looking in, trying to take advantage.

Oswego Speedway’s current guaranteed starters are three-time Classic champion Otto Sitterly and Novelis Supermodified Spring Champion Randy Ritskes.

Sitterly currently leads the Novelis Supermodified Driver’s Championship at Oswego with yet another win in the Jim Shampine Memorial.  The driver of the John Nicotra Racing No. 7 holds a 51-point edge on Ritskes in the battle for the title.

Dave Gruel is currently third in the Oswego championship standings, 8-points behind Ritskes and a guaranteed International Classic starting position.

Joining Sitterly and Ritskes as a current guaranteed Classic starter from Oswego Speedway is Pathfinder Bank Small Block Super shoe Andrew Schartner of Charlotte, NC.  Schartner has two Pathfinder Bank SBS wins at Oswego this season and leads Mike Bond by 6-points in the championship.  The driver of the Crow Motorsports No. 18 SBS has never competed in a Novelis Supermodified at Oswego Speedway.

The ISMA Supermodified season kicks-off on Saturday at Oswego Speedway presented by Shea Concrete and North Country Home Builders.

Grandstand gates will open at 1:30 p.m. on June 7 with ISMA time trials set for 5 p.m. and racing at 6:30 p.m.

Once again in 2014, kids 16 & under will be admitted free of charge with a paid adult with active military also admitted free with I.D.
