Cue up all the corny weather-related puns that have been used in the past to describe any of Steve Paine’s record-holding 90 career Black Rock Speedway wins.

The Waterloo, N.Y. driver known as “The Hurricane” formally announced on Thursday that he will compete full-time for the track championship at “The Rock”.

Black Rock Speedway promoters Mike Jackson and Sue Foster made the Modifieds a priority as they started their tenure at the fast four-tenths-mile Dundee, N.Y. oval beginning with the 2015 season. Bringing a driver back to the speedway with the history that Paine brings to the table is exciting for race fans and speedway staff alike.

“To have Steve coming back to Black Rock is something we are really happy about,” said Jackson.  “We want Modified racing to return to prominence at Black Rock Speedway and what better way to do that but to bring back the most prolific modified driver in the track’s history? To win at Black Rock in 2015, you’re going to have to beat the best.”

Paine and the 7x team made two starts at Black Rock in 2014 — taking home finishes of 7th and 2nd.  “The Hurricane” also won the Bull Ring Challenge 50-lap event at the Woodhull Raceway in September of 2014 to go along with his pair of wins at Canandaigua.

Paine’s team made their announcement Thursday evening on Social Media that the seven-time champion would return to Black Rock Speedway full-time in 2015:

“[One] more week before The Hurricane straps into his familiar HigFab 7X.  We know there [have been] a lot of questions regarding our plans for the 2015 season.  We will be running weekly at Black Rock Speedway on Friday nights and we will also be back full-time at Canandaigua Motorsports Park.”

The 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2007 Modified track champion will return to Friday nights in Dundee but with a different wrinkle.  2015 will see the Modified division be comprised of a rules package allowing both Small Blocks and Big Block Modified engine combinations.  The Modifieds will also be the last division to race their heats and feature, which has had teams spending the offseason trying to determine what the right combination for powerplant will be.

Hurricane Stat Attack

  • Paine is the all-time BRS Modified leader in wins with 90 (6 Big Block, 84 Small Block)
  • Paine holds the BRS record for wins in a season with 13 in 2001
  • Paine has won 304 Modified features in his career dating back to 1984
  • Paine has won 91 features and 11 championships at Canandaigua, and 90 features and seven championships at Black Rock

This adds to a very talented driver roster that plan to make Black Rock Speedway their Friday night home in 2015. Up and coming drivers like Joe Dgien, Brady Fultz and Wayne Robertson who will compete with veteran racers Derrick Podsiadlo, Dylan Dewert, Fran Hilton, Ron Cartwright and Stacy Jackson.

The drama and excitement doesn’t stop there as the Modifieds will be joined by a stout field of Crate Sportsman competitors, $500 to win Street Stocks, M&M Auto Sales and Service IMCA Modifieds, NAPA Know How 4 Cylinders and Creekside Entertainment Bandits.  Weekly Friday night racing kicks off at 7PM.

One Final Open Practice Session

Sunday’s practice session at 3 p.m. is open to any race vehicle no matter what tire you run.  If you race on dirt and want time on the track to shake everything down — Black Rock Speedway will give you as much time on Sunday afternoon as you need.  Pit gates will swing open at 1 p.m.
