FONDA, NY — Story and Audio by Race Chaser Online New York Correspondent Steven Ovens — GT Smith Photo & Steven Ovens Photo — In the last 8 months, Jeff Rockefeller has experienced some of the highest of highs in his breakout into the Northeast DIRT Modified world.  A win Saturday night at the ‘Track of Champions’ the Fonda Speedway has just added to this great story.

It is our nature to root for the underdog or the underfunded team out on the race track.  In a time in our sport where money talks the talk and walks the walk- it just makes your feel good to see a driver and his team overcome that level of competition and score a victory.  Rockefeller did that back in October at NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week and he did it again Saturday at Fonda.

Looking back at his incredible run at Super DIRT Week, Rockefeller qualified among the Top-6 cars that got locked into the 2013 edition of the Syracuse 200.  Some may say ‘It’s qualifying, no big deal.’  Not so race fans!  You have to consider that 2013 was Jeff’s first trip to Syracuse in a Big-Block Modified and had never raced there before.

They struggled mightily in Practice, but come time trials they tried something new to see if it worked.  The car stuck in Turn 1 and again in Turn 3 and the feel-good story of 2013 Super DIRT Week was born.

Fast forward to June 14th, 2014.  Rockefeller suffered a crash late in the going of that night’s feature event that left his #816 Modified with heavy damage.  Damage that they attempted to fix in order to take the car back to Fonda for last Thursday’s Empire State Championship race.  Even up to Saturday morning before their regular night of racing they were still thrashing on the rear end of the car, with thoughts that the car still wasn’t right.

All of the hard work and extra time put into the car Saturday morning certainly paid off for the Rockefeller team.  Jeff would roll away in the 30 lap feature from the front row and would dominate the field to take home his first Big Block Modified feature of his career.  He became the 122nd driver to etch their name in the Fonda Speedway record books.

Rockefeller joined Steven Ovens to talk about the win, reminiscing about their run at Syracuse and looking to the rest of 2014.
