BREWERTON, NY – JULY 12, 2013 (By Dave Medler) – Heading into the 2013 season, Dale Planck was going to be a driver who would contend on a weekly basis when he announced he would be a regular at the Brewerton Speedway teaming up with Rood Racing. Coming into Friday night, Planck related that he was struggling with his No.77x, till a call to his other car owner Mike Payne for setup advice.

That advice paid off as Planck made the winning pass on Willy Decker on lap 27 of the 35 lap Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified feature Friday night. For Planck it was his ninth career victory at the “D-Shaped Dirt Demon.”

Other winners on Dig Safely NY Night were, Chris Fleming, Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modifieds, Tim Devendorf, Anchor Bar & Grill Mod Lites and Chuck Powelczyk, Four Cylinder Super Stocks.

Tim Sears Jr. bolted out to the narrow early lead over Willy Decker to start the 35 lap Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified feature. Sears lead was short lived as one lap later, lap 2, Decker riding the top of the speedway drove into the lead.

On lap 6, Matt Sheppard and Larry Wight made contact bringing out the yellow. Wight would head to the pits and wouldn’t return.

With 10 laps showing on the scoring tower, Decker held a narrow lead riding the cushion over Sears who ran the extreme bottom of the track. Behind the top-two, Chuck Bower and Dale Planck battled for third and fourth with Rob Bellinger showing fifth.

Just before the halfway point, Decker opened a half a straightaway lead as Sears, Planck and Bower fought for position with Chris Hile in fifth.

On lap 20, Planck moved into second and starting eating away at Deckers lead. Sears, Bower and Hile still showed in the top-five. Behind the top-runners there was two-three wide racing all over the speedway.

With 10 laps to go, Decker was still running the high side as Planck inched even closer by running the bottom to the middle in turns one and two,and the top in three and four.

On lap 26, Planck was all over Decker as the pair headed down the back straightaway. Going into three and four with Decker occupying the top, Planck darted down low exiting turn four shooting by to be scored the new leader on lap 27. The rest of the way, nobody had anything for Planck as he was the first under the checkers. Willy Decker, Tim Sears Jr., Chuck Bower and Jimmy Phelps finished second through fifth. Chris Hile, Ryan Phelps, Matt Sheppard, Pat Ward and Billy Decker came home sixth through tenth.

After parking his Rood Racing/Sun Drop Citrus Soda/ Sav-on Convenience Stores/No.77x/Bicknell in victory lane, Planck talked about his victory.

“Man, what a change in this race car, holy cow. I’ve been struggling with this race car all year long. The Rood family is great, their standing behind me with my schedule changing up,” Planck was recently hired to drive the Mike Payne Racing No.7zon the series and at Humberstone Speedway to get home track points.

“I went to Mike Payne for setup help this week and man he hooked me up. This thing is ungodly to drive, it’s just awesome.”

Planck then talked about the pass for the lead and the win.” It seemed the top groove was good. Willy (Decker) got out on us on the top, and I saw it kept getting further around and further around,” top groove kept moving up the track as the feature went on. “I caught up to him on the top. And I said let see if I can catch some bite off the bottom. I changed my line up in three and four and what a difference.”

Planck finished up by relating that he couldn’t thank his son Stephen enough because with his busy race schedule it’s all him on the No.77x as far as working on it and throwing setups in it.

In the 20 lap Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modified feature, JJ Courcy making a rare appearancetook the lead on lap 5 and looked to runaway and hide. Point leader Chris Fleming had other ideas after being involved in a caution period and restarting last. Fleming was able to rundown and pass Courcy from a straightaway behind with four laps to go and then drive away for the victory. JJ Courcy, John West and John Thayer rounded out the top-five.

After starting deep in the pack, Tim Devendorf in a three wide move took the lead on lap 8 of the 20 lap Anchor Bar & Grill Mod Lite feature. On most nights when Devendorf grabs the lead he cruises to the win the rest of the way. On Friday night Rick Demo was all over Devendorf in the closing laps making him work hard for the win. Behind Devendorf and Demo was Justin Williams, Mike Mullen and Jeff Blackburn who had a great run from deep in the field.

Chuck Powelczyk took the on lap two of the 15 lap Four Cylinder Super Stock feature and never looked back for his 61st Brewerton Speedway win. Brian Evenden, Jessica Herbert-Redhead, Kyle Young and Jeff Herbert came home second through fifth.
