Veteran dirt track racer Bob Buono made a change in 2014 — and it was a change that Bob seemed to be pleased with when interviewed at Motorsports Expo in Syracuse, N.Y.

Buono started the season in a Crate Sportsman and was bit by the bad luck bug early and often.  An opportunity to swap rides to acquire a Street Stock allowed Buono to race in the ultra competitive Street Stock division at the Black Rock Speedway.

Buono was once again competitive throughout the season and it appeared that he had returned to his comfort zone.  For years Buono has competed in the street stock ranks and previously in the Pro Stock style cars at Canandaigua Motorsports Park.  But Buono says that even that car wasn’t up to par with what he likes to feel out of a car to be capable to challenge for wins.

The plans for 2015 for Buono has several components that include competing with the Race of Champions Street Stock Series, weekly competition at the Black Rock Speedway and supporting his son Brett in his Crate Sportsman efforts. The younger Buono driver may see more travels in 2015 with all of the options to travel with different series that the Crate Sportsman have available to them this season.

Buono talked about how much fun he has racing in the Empire 100 yearly at the Black Rock Speedway on their traditional October Dutch Hoag National Open weekend.  There was also a lot of discussion about the evolution of the current street stock as far as chassis goes as well as the popular offseason debate of standard transmissions vs. bert/falcon transmissions.

As we look toward the start of the 2015 season, I look at Bob Buono as a driver to keep your eye on — especially at his home track at Black Rock Speedway.  With a newer car that fits his driving style and renewed confidence in the street stock ranks, there’s no reason why Buono couldn’t find himself taking home several $500 to win feature events this season.
