STAFFORD SPRINGS, Conn. — In his attempt to sweep this season’s NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour races at Stafford Motor Speedway, Ryan Preece is off to a perfect start.
Preece posted the fastest time in Coors Light Pole Qualifying on Saturday, winning his 15th career series pole.
The Berlin, Connecticut native’s time of 18.513 seconds (97.229 mph) put his TS Haulers No. 6 on top ahead of Sunday’s running of the NAPA Fall Final 150.
The pole was the fifth of Preece’s career at the Stafford half-mile, after he missed last weekend’s Tour race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway but finished fourth in the NASCAR XFINITY Series event at Kentucky Speedway.
Preece enters Sunday’s 150-lap event fifth in the championship standings, 26 points behind the lead.
Four-time series champion and current points leader Doug Coby will join Preece on the front row Sunday. Coby drove his No. 2 Mayhew Tools machine to a time of 18.520 seconds in the qualifying session.
Coby has qualified on the front row for the last eight Stafford events. He enters the weekend 11 markers up in the championship standings over Justin Bonsignore, as he seeks his fourth straight series championship.
Former Tour champion Ron Silk (18.526 seconds) was third in the No. 85 Stuart’s Automotive Chevrolet, while Timmy Solomito qualified fourth. Solomito enters Stafford third in the championship standings, 14 points from the lead.
Rowan Pennink rounded out the top five, followed by Kyle Bonsignore, Jon McKennedy, Chase Dowling, Dave Sapienza and Bobby Santos.
Justin Bonsignore, who enters the Fall Final 11 points back in second, will start Sunday’s race from 15th on the grid.
The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour returns to the track at Stafford on Sunday, with the NAPA Fall Final 150 kicking off at 3:15 p.m. ET.
