SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, Mexico — By John Tejada, NASCAR — Getty Images for NASCAR photo — Rubén Garcia Jr. will lead the NASCAR Mexico Toyota Series field to green in Sunday’s Potosina 200 from the Autódromo Potosino.
The 18-year-old NASCAR Next driver turned in a fast lap of 21.172 seconds (85.018 mph) for his third career pole and first of 2014. Garcia Jr.s’ time was .01 seconds off the track record set by Daniel Suárez in the series’ first visit to the half-mile oval this year.
Suárez, the current points leader, Drive for Diversity driver for Rev Racing in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East and NASCAR Next Alum, will join Garcia Jr. on the front row after registering a 21.257-second lap (84.678 mph). Rubén Rovelo (21.261 seconds / 84.662 mph) will start third, followed by Irwin Vences and Abraham Calderón.
Antonio Pérez, Carlos Peralta, Homero Richards, José Luis Ramírez and Patrick Goeters completed the top 10 qualifiers.
Green flag for the Potosina 200, second event of the five-race Desafio that will decide the series championship, is scheduled for 12:45 p.m. CT.
