NCATS QUALIFYING: Tagliani Earns EIR Pole; Fifth Career Canadian Tire Series Pole, First On An Oval

WETASKIWIN, Alta. – By Jason Cunningham, NASCAR — Matthew Murnaghan/Getty Images for NASCAR photo — It was an evening of firsts at Edmonton International Raceway – first trip for the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 to the Alberta bullring, and the first oval pole for Alex Tagliani.

Tagliani, from Lachenaie, Quebec, posted a fast lap of 12.514 seconds (71.919 mph) in qualifying Friday evening at the quarter-mile to earn his fifth career pole. The first four came on road courses, his specialty driving discipline.

Mark Dilley, who led afternoon practice, will join Tagliani on the outside row tonight thanks to his fast qualifying lap of 12.525 (71.856). J.R. Fitzpatrick was third-fastest at 12.559 (71.662).

L.P. Dumoulin and Andrew Ranger were the fourth- and fifth-fastest qualifiers, respectively. The remaining top-10 qualifiers included Joey McColm, Scott Steckly, Jason Hathaway, D.J. Kennington and James Van Domselaar.

Tagliani became the third different pole winner in four Canadian Tire Series races this season.
