SASKATOON, Sask. — By Jason Christley, NASCAR — Matthew Murnaghan/Getty Images for NASCAR photo — Scott Steckly is looking for his first NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 win of the season. And he’s setting a fast pace in practice Wednesday at Auto Clearing Motor Speedway, a track where he’s won twice.
Steckly’s No. 22 Canadian Tire/Jumpstart Dodge led both half-hour practice sessions for Wednesday night’s Velocity Prairie Thunder 250. His lap of 14.669 seconds (81.723 mph) around the progressively-banked .333-mile oval was nearly two-tenths faster than the rest of the field.
Jason Hathaway was second quick at 14.829 (80.842), followed by Andrew Ranger at 14.888 (80.565). Ranger has won the last two NASCAR Canadian Tire Series races.
Joey McColm and Noel Dowler rounded out the top 10. Steckly’s lap that was fastest in first practice was good enough for fifth overall.
DJ Kennington was sixth, followed by points leader JR Fitzpatrick, Mark Dilley, Steve Mathews and Alex Tagliani.
Tagliani’s lap was from the first practice, where he was second fastest overall. He was involved in a backstretch incident with Dennis LaForce just three laps into his final practice run.
Qualifying for the Velocity Prairie Thunder 250 is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. MT and the green flag is set for 7:30 p.m.
