KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Kyle Larson put up a big mark late in opening practice for Sunday’s Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway.
Larson (189.056 mph) was a full mile per hour faster than defending race winner Kevin Harvick (187.5 mph) in the 85-minute practice. Harvick knocked off his fellow California driver while Kyle Busch also leapfrogged Larson’s No. 42 CreditOne Bank Chevrolet with 15 minutes to go.
When the red-and-black flags were displayed, Busch ended up third (187.331 mph) while Ryan Blaney (187.182 mph) slotted in fourth. Playoff drivers swept the first five spots as spring Kansas winner Martin Truex Jr. (187.123 mph) completed the top-five.
Kurt Busch was sixth, followed by rookie Daniel Suarez, Matt Kenseth, Clint Bowyer and Jamie McMurray’s Chevrolet book-ending the top-10 in speeds for Chip Ganassi Racing.
With a possible threat of rain looming on the speedway Saturday, many teams did a mix of race and qualifying runs throughout the session. Carl Long withdrew his No. 66 MBM Motorsports entry which allows the newly-formed Starcom Racing with Derrike Cope to make their Cup debut this weekend at Kansas Speedway.
Next up for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series is Coors Light Pole Qualifying scheduled to roll off at 6:15 p.m. ET (NBCSN, MRN, SiriusXM Ch. 90)
