Kyle Busch Paces Opening Cup Homestead Practice

HOMESTEAD, Fla. — The Toyota duo of Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr. ended up as the two fastest drivers in Friday’s first Cup practice session at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Truex led early on in the practice when he had two tenths of a second on Ky. Busch during the first half-hour. The speeds picked up before Friday night’s qualifying at the 1.5-mile track as Busch leapfrogged Truex for the top spot with a time of 31.269 seconds (172.695 mph).

The No. 78 Bass Pro Shops/Furniture Row Camry was second (172.529 mph) with both Busch and Truex being the only two drivers to run above 172 mph.

Texas winner Kevin Harvick (171.865 mph) slotted in third while Kyle Larson (171.217 mph) was the fastest Chevrolet fourth on the board.

Denny Hamlin (170.854 mph) completed the top-five in his No. 11 FedEx Toyota. The No. 6 car of Trevor Bayne (170.417 mph) was sixth ast he top-eight drivers eclipsed 170 mph on their fastest laps.

Playoff contender Brad Keselowski ran into some trouble with his brakes, running a minute five laps in the 85-minute session. Keselowski ended up 21st in the opening practice.

The driver of the No. 2 Team Penske Ford wasn’t the only driver to have car issues Friday afternoon. Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s team changed an engine after something was a miss on the No. 88 Axalta Chevrolet and ran the 14th-fastest time.
