Joe Gibbs Racing driver Erik Jones paced the first NASCAR XFINITY Series practice Friday at Dover International Raceway. Jones toured the one-mile oval with a fast time of 22.699 seconds (158.597 mph) behind the wheel of his No. 20 Reser’s Fine Foods Toyota.

He was followed closely in second spot by Richard Childress Racing driver Ty Dillon, who ran a fast time of 22.709 seconds (158.527 mph) driving his No. 3 Rheem Chevrolet. JGR driver Daniel Suarez, who is still seeking his first career series win, was third in the session (22.748 seconds/158.256 mph).

Matt Tifft, the driver of the No. 18 JGR Toyota this weekend, was fourth (22.769 seconds/158.110 mph), while JR Motorsports driver Alex Bowman, who is behind the wheel for the first time in 2016, rounded out the top-five in the No. 88 (23.060 seconds/156.114 mph).

Talladega winner Elliott Sadler was sixth driving for JR Motorsports, with Joey Logano and Brandon Jones finishing the top eight positions. Paul Menard, driving the No. 2 for RCR this weekend, was ninth and Justin Allgaier rounded out the top-10.

The session did not go without incident. Early on, Darrell Wallace Jr. hit the wall with his No. 6 LoudMouth Exhaust Ford and he ended up unloading a back-up car because of severe right-rear damage. Jeb Burton crashed off turn four in the middle of the session, pounding the front suspension of his No. 43 Rocky Ridge Custom Trucks Ford into the inside frontstretch wall. He also was forced to a back-up car.

The final incident involved Paul Menard, who although posted the ninth fastest time of the session, will not be driving that same car in Saturday’s race. Menard mentioned that something broke on the right-front suspension of his No. 2 and sent him straight into the turn three wall with the right-front. He will also roll out the back-up ride.

The NASCAR XFINITY Series has one more practice session on Friday, before unloading Saturday morning for qualifying at 10:30 a.m. ET. The race is scheduled to go green with the first of two “Dash 4 Cash” heat races, at 2 p.m. Saturday, live on Fox Sports 1, Motor Racing Network (MRN) and SirusXM NASCAR Radio, channel 90.
