Chaz Woodward put the exclamation point on a beautiful night of competitive Mini-Outlaw Kart Racing at Millbridge Speedway in Salisbury, N.C. on Wednesday when he stormed to victory in the SKE Karts Open Mini Outlaw feature. Woodward had also won his heat race earlier in the evening, setting stage for a feature battle with second heat winner Max McLaughlin.
McLaughlin led early but Woodward soon drove his No. 51 to the top and charged around the CraZ 8 of McLaughlin. He would never look back en-route to a popular victory. McLaughlin was forced to the pits with motor problems. Tom Hubert got to second with his fast No. 30, but was unable to catch the 51 of Woodward in time to challenge for the win. Adam Welch drove his SKE no. 71 to third. J.D. Frye scored a fourth place finish filling in for Karsyn Elledge in the No. 3 and Slater rounded out the top five.
Rapidly improving racer Ahnna Parkhurst in the Ollie’s Outlet No. 23 drove a strong race and outdueled the No. 25 of Zach Wolfe to take the checkered flag in the Woodforest National Bank Intermediate Class. Rob Hall crossed the line in third, followed by Hunter Richards and Alex Murray.
Wolfe won the heat race for the Intermediate division.
The 1 of Macey Scearce appeared to be the favorite in the Box Stock class after winning her heat race. However, the No. 6 of Clark Houston has been nearly unstoppable in prior events this season and the race figured to be a battle between the two young hotshoes.
At the drop of the green it was Scearce jumping out to the early lead but Houston would take over maintain control down to the closing laps with Scearce keeping him in her sights. Fans were on their feet as the pair came out of turn four side-by-side and got hooked together, forcing both of them down the track and leaving just enough room for third place Kyle Campbell to beat both of them to the finish line by about a foot!
In victory lane it was the No. 03 of Kyle Campbell enjoying the thrill of improbable victory, reminding everyone that the race is never over until the checkered flag falls. Scearce was second followed by Houston, Richard Gould and Estella Sawyer.
The “Flyin’ 5” of Gavan Boschele and Matthew Gould in the No. 27 picked up heat wins in the Beginner Box Stock division. In the feature, Boschele came out on top. Nick Goss finished second, Hunter Kohn was third, Aubrey Rose fourth and Gage Painter rounded out the top five.
Millbridge is back in action this Saturday, June 7th for a program of “wingless” Mini Outlaw competition that also includes Legends Cars and Karts. Practice gets underway at 6pm. For more information visit the Millbridge Speedway page on Facebook or see MiniOutlaws.com on the web.
