ARCA: Gallagher Says “I Have a Theory About Salem”

April 23, 2014 — team release — ARCA photo — CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Las Vegas, Nevada’s Spencer Gallagher has been inching closer and closer to Victory Lane, and it’s been no more apparent than at Salem Speedway where the driver of the No. 23 Allegiant Travel Chevrolet finished a career-best second one year ago after leading 10 laps.

Gallagher, who also finished ninth at Salem in 2012, can’t wait to go back. And with the Federated Auto Parts 200 presented by Crunch ‘N Nutter coming this weekend, April 26-27 at the historic, half-mile, high-banked oval, he won’t have to wait long.

“If you take every aspect of what you think short track racing should be, and then ratchet it up to 11, you’ll have Salem,” Gallagher said.

Gallagher has an interesting take on the design of the place, and it involves planet Mars.

“I have a theory that a mad scientist designed the place. Picture Darlington (Raceway); shrink it down to a half-mile and give it the surface of Mars. When you come off of turn four, you can’t see because your head is banging off the side of the headrest and you’re dead sideways. You’ll do this for 60 laps at a time. You come off of turn four flat-footed, wide open, sideways and it just sticks. That is what makes Salem so fun. There is no other track like it and it is definitely one of the best races the ARCA Racing Series puts on all season.”

Many would agree that the grand ole track indeed does put on some of the most action-packed and exciting racing on earth. Maybe that’s why the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards has been racing there since 1955. In fact, no track has ever appeared on ARCA’s schedule more over the years than Salem. This year’s spring race will be ARCA’s 95th on the legendary oval in southern Indiana.

Gallagher will pilot Chassis No. 201 at Salem this weekend, a brand new Chevrolet Impala for the Ryan ‘Pickle’ London-led team.

Allegiant Travel will adorn the sides of Gallagher’s No. 23 Chevrolet Impala for this weekend’s event. With low-low fares, nonstop, all-jet service and premier travel partners, Allegiant provides a complete travel experience with great value and without all the hassle. Just two hours away from Salem Speedway, Allegiant services the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) with nonstop flights to St. Petersburg-Clearwater (Fla.) International Airport (PIE), Orlando Sanford (Fla.) International Airport (SFB), Punta Gorda (Fla.) Airport (PGD), and Myrtle Beach (S.C.) International Airport (MYR).

With the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series idle until the beginning of May, Gallagher’s GMS Racing teammate Joey Coulter will swap his normal driver duties for the role as spotter. Coulter, a former ARCA Racing Series winner, will be Gallagher’s eyes in the sky and assist the 24-year-old throughout the 200-lap event.

One month ago during the ARCA Racing Series event at Mobile (Ala.) International Speedway, Gallagher started the ARCA Mobile 200 from the 11th position. Driving the No. 23 Allegiant Travel Chevrolet Impala, Gallagher spent over 180 of 200 laps inside the top-10 and overcame a late race spin to capture his career-best finish of seventh at the Alabama short track.

Gallagher will join fellow ARCA Racing Series drivers to sign autographs on Sunday, April 27th from 11:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. ET. The pre-race autograph session will take place at Salem Speedway.
