Celebrating his 300th race at the Sydney NRMA 500, Lee Holdsworth is off to a good start in his Erebus Mercedes, topping the day’s second practice session with a 1:28.88 second lap.

Holdsworth came in with a 0.06 second lead over Red Bull’s Jamie Whincup at a circuit he has been successful in the past, having recorded a race win in 2010 with Garry Rogers Motorsport.

David Reynolds came home third in Practice Two, ahead of Shane van Gisbergen, with Michael Caruso, Russell Ingall, James Courtney, Scott McLaughlin, Rick Kelly and Craig Lowndes completing the top 10.

Both Jason Bright and James Moffat found the wall in the session, with the Team BOC Commodore going out of Practice Two early and the Altima with damage down the left hand side of the car. Bright’s accident blocked Lowndes, who was on a fast lap at that stage of the session.

Bright’s BJR teammate Fabian Coulthard has also sustained damage.

Meanwhile, returning star Marcos Ambrose was 22nd this time, with a lap of 1:30.248 seconds, again 1.3 seconds off of the leader. Others to note include Garth Tander in 11th and Mark Winterbottom in 24th.

One practice session remains this afternoon, kicking off at 2:20 p.m. local time.
